I imagine he got that oh a few years ago say prior to the passing of safe act. I don't think the gun is worth anything, but if he wants a quick $100. Just kidding, best to take it to someone in the area that knows the value on Winchester. Nice gift though.

 

I'm probably the worst judge of gun values in the world so I wouldn't be much help. but, man is that a nice rifle, I'll bet it took down lots of game throughout it's life. Love old guns, especially when they're in the kind of shape that one is.

Your friend can buy a temporary subscription to the blue book for 2.95, that would tell him the approximate value. Personally I wouldn't sell that unless someone put a gun to my head.

I have many old Winchesters and can tell you unfortunately, the fact it was drilled & tapped for a scope mount decreases the value by about half. What was once a $600 gun is now worth around $300. That being said, it is a great shooter/hunter and I have a similar old 94 my Dad bought after he came home from the Korean War. He checkered the stocks which ruined the originality, but it shoots 75 yard 3-shot cloverleaf groups and it will never be sold.
Hang onto it and enjoy it...Otherwise, its a $300 gun.

 

I agree with Dan. It's a shooter/hunter. Use it and have fun.

Don't pre '64's bring a higher premium?
I dialed mine in with lever evolutions and its an easy 100+ yd rifle with a lyman peep.

 

Unmolested pre-64's bring a premium. Drilling, tapping, checkering, shortening the stock, rebluing, etc ...all hurt value. If you get the gun already altered, nothing you can do but enjoy it. I will bet it's a very accurate piece ..

 

Hey guys. The Winchester I mentioned in the above posts is Mine . Got her for 2 yards.
I have never fired it. What ammo would you Recommend. just looking to see how she prints on paper. No idea what the scope is set for.

well it doesn't have that UGLY cross bolt safety so that is a Giant Plus!

 

Once you shoot that gun you won't think about what its worth. Those guns are dead on and a lot of fun. Ammo is affordable and available.
John Wayne stuff all the way. No crappy safe act issues either. It's a keeper.
