Just got my Mosin Nagant up to test fire stage. Build took 1 day. Research took a year, lol. Well it was procrastination. A year ago i had a gun smith cut the barrel down and thread it. Then i added a basic 308 muzzle brake. It then sat locked up as a barreled action for about 10 months before i decided to finish it. I spent a few months deciding what i wanted and ordered all the parts about 2 weeks ago. Today i went and got the tools i needed and spent all day doing drilling, tapping, and fileing.
List of parts
Archangel stock
Timney trigger
Rock Solid Industries MI-24C scope rail and bolt body
Burris MTAC 1-4x scope
Burris Fastfire Red Dot
Burris P.E.P.R. mount
Harris Style bipod
I started by fitting the Timney trigger. Beware because I had to file the area between the pin holes and the forward screw holes quite a bit to get the trigger to mount flush.
Then i started working on the RSI scope mount. To mount this you have to drill and tap 3 holes into the reciever. 2 above the breach and one on the left rear side. I was nervous but all in all i didnt do a bad job. I tried boresighting before drilling but when i was done i was aiming slightly right. But nothing major. I did tilt the front end down slightly so i can get some more adjustment for longer range shots. Beware this is a pain in the arse to mount. If you have no skills dont try it. I cecked, double checked, center punched my marks, took my time and still had a bit of trouble. I was just slightly off on one hole because the drill must have walked a touch and this cause me to have to ream out the mounting holes a bit for it to mount correctly. Also you have to cut down the screws and the block that fits into your rear sight base. They send these over sized so the will fit all action types.
The hard work done i fitted the bipod. Its not clear where this should go but when you look inside you will find a hole that is not drilled out. Drill this through and you can use the provided sling swivel. Start with a smaller bit and work your way up till it can start threading.
I can give details if anyone needs help.
Now to get to the range
If all goes well the paint job will start.
The scope is a loaner from another rifle of mine. This is going to get a leatherwood LER scout scope and som MBUS filp up sights.
I know why take $150 surplus rifle and do that to it. Someone says this in every mosin custom build post i have seen. The answer is because its mine and i can do what i like with it. Also it was just a nothing special 91/30 with a nice bore, almost perfect rifling and as smooth of an action you can get from a mosin.

Nice. I'm currently working on one but I heard the heat effects the barrel and the consistency isn't reliable. Debating on fluting it for heat dissipation and seeing it that would help. Otherwise, it will make a nice winter rifle.

Finally shot yesterday. With laser boresighting at the house first i was on paper at 100 yards. 30 1/2 MOA clicks low and 16 left. First time using bore sight BTW. And i did it in my house at like 15 feet and just centered cross hairs on the dot. About 3 MOA group. 5 shots. Dialed it in to about 1 MOA left. Cross wind picked up a bit and was gusty. Ran out of that ammo. Only had 10 rounds steel core silver tip. Started shooting with some non steel core ammo that i purchased for thd stripper clips at a good deal but was real dirty looking. I wiped them with a rag b4 loading. Groups were spread out horizontally about 6MOA but only anout 1MOA high. Hitting about 2 MOA lower then other ammo. I will post pictures of ammo later.
Trigger was great but i was giving a bit too much finger.
Magazine on Archangel sucks. You have to open and close bolt to get mag to pop up first round for feeding. Had some trouble with rounds tilting funny in magazind making it hard for bolt to grab round. Some rounds would hang up and not feed into chamber straight. Not reliable to say the least. I think it needs a stronger spring. The spring is real weak. I had no problems with box mag. All was smooth.
Burris 1-4 MTAC scope is a winner. I shot with ilumination off. Nice and clear. Good eye relief. Shot at 1x and 4x. 25 rounds total.
Recoil is strong but not the mule kick of standard mosin stock.
I like the Rock Solid bolt handle
Scope rail still solid.
I dont like the crown that Country Gunsmith did. Ill post a few pics for opinion. I am no crown expert so i need some input. I might try and put an 11deg on it depending on the feedback.
Very loud as expected.
Was fun to shoot. Got many looks and likes at range.

the only fix i saw was regarding a production problem that caused the plastic to deform during cooling. I also saw some stuff with people who had problems with the magazine falling out when shooting. I dont think either is my issue. What fix are you refering too. Can you post a link or describe it for me?

Ok. So i filed down some of the area on the stock that was blocking the interupter and now i can get 4 of 5 rounds to feed. There are still 2 issues. One is that the bolt really needs to be pulled hard back to the rear to make sure you get behind the rim of the next round and to kind of jult the round up into position. The next thing is that the follower is not putting the last round in the same position as the rounds that are pushed up by other rounds. This causes the last round to jam up and not want to push forward. Pushing down on the rim end of the cartridge tilts the tip end up and then it will feed most of the time if the tilt is not too much or it hits the top side of the chamber and jams up.

Wow. I knew that I was going to have to tweak the stock and all the mags, but man I'm glad I only paid $100 for the archangel.
As far as the links, I watch the ones on the promag site & a few of the ones on YouTube. Was planning in baking the mags the way they show to prevent those issues.
I did notice that the barrel I'm working in doesn't sit right in the stock and am going to have to mill it down some more which will probably not allow me to flute the barrel.
Did you use the same barrel?
