I just use military cans $8

 

Where do you get military cans for $8.00? They are up around $20 these days.

 

Good luck. Not much out there crap these days. Search Craigslist or Facebook marketplace and try to get lucky. I found two metal cabinets for $25.00. Man was I pleased with that.

 

Try Harbor Freight I saw some in there reasonable too

Makes sense, but if you don’t know where to get $8.00 ammo cans these days it’s pretty hard to make that as a recommendation to solve his current issue. I’ve been looking for a few more, but the prices are insane. Not too long ago you could get them for $15.00 bit now it’s $20 or even $25/$30 for an ammo can. I should have bought another 10-15 when they were $15/can but buy cans or buy ammo or guns? I chose the later.

 

I use a lateral file cabinet I found on the side of the road. Added 2 hasps and padlocks

 

I have a similar set-up with a file cabinet that I trash picked several years ago. Works great and cost virtually nothing.

 

I think harbor freight has plastic ones that are a little cheaper than the metal ones........I cant recall the pricing on them.

 

Harbor Freight still has the plastic ammo cans for $7, cheaper when on sale. I use them for some of my storage, they drop crosswise in the industrial filing cabinets like they were made for it. You need the good cabinets with the heavy rails to support the weight. You can get them for free or cheap when they look too bad for someones office. Most I have bought for $25 or so.

 

Final Update: after a lot of research I settled on the Harbor Freight Yukon 46" rolling workbench (locking large cabinet underneath) for ammo storage and to multipurpose the top as a smithing and luthier workstation. With shipping it was $508. The next cheapest alternative is the Hornady ammo locker at $565. And just an FYI, a quick call to Stack On revealed that they are not manufacturing the Firepower Ammo cabinet at this time. It is not discontinued, but out of production for now.

 

I use a small cooler and put some silica gel packs inside.

 

I'll post pics of what I settled on; still in mid project and awaiting a few items.

Is it bad to keep ammo in its original box?

 

Not necessarily, but for long term storage cool and dry are optimal, hence a sealed ammo can

 

I keep my ammo in a lateral file cabinet in the original boxes. Would these be good to get to add?

Unless it is sealed the silica packets will be used up in mere days. I tossed some in my ammo cabinet and they went from blue to pink in a week or so. This is what prompted me to buy the set of 10 ammo cans with gaskets to add these to.

 

I promised I would post what I came up with. 46" Yukon cart (Harbor Freight) $379 + 96 shipping. Husky metal pegboard and back frame (Home Depot) $58 0 shipping (in store p/up). LED magnifying lamp (Amazon) $40 0 shipping. Hanging and draw organizers from HD and Amazon, totaled about $75. Swivel work stool $79 (Amazon).

I have a couple of these..... They are good and hold a lot. Amazon used to carry it. I think I got it for $125 or so.

For ammo storage I use the plastic 5 gal buckets from Home Depot and from Amazon I buy the screw on lid altogether it’s about $15 each and it’s air tight.
