Recently I purchased a few guns and the background check is different now, I believe. There is a required question asking your race.

Why is this necessary? Next they will be asking my religion, my political party, if I paid all my income taxes, and whether I think the IRS's Lois Lerner is a good soul, and on and on and on...

The federal government is already violating the law by keeping the background information in their computers for up to several weeks and perhaps longer. And this is only what they have admitted.

Why hasn't anyone including the NRA sued the government for violating the Brady Act? The Act CLEARLY states that the information in a background check shall not be kept in any form including electronic form for any period or for any purpose. Back in 1993, the NRA lobbied hard to have this provision included in the law and now they are rolling over on us.

But how wpuld they even use it for anything? If this was 1914 I could understand it as part of identity- you know the old ID cards with no pictures so they asked height hair color, eye color, build... it allows you to be sure the John Smith in front of you is the same John Smith who got the card. But in 2014, when they ask your address too... how many John Smiths at 123 Elm St ate there that match the info in the DMV, Military ID, IRS record, etc databases that any cop gets instant access to, with a photo, from his car in the field? The only excuse is some kind of social research to see if disapprovals are disproportionate based on race- and every other place the got asks a race question for that kind of reason it is optional to answer.

Maybe Obama just wants the political cred to say 'I revised the gun form to get more details about buyers' and gloss over that they are useless BS details

I am guessing that it is being used as an identifier. Just about any application you fill out for anything today asks for race.

Look at the bright side. If they have a 4473 with your name on it that lists you as a male black and you are white you get off the hook for whatever the person did wrong.
