Interesting article. I take issue with some points being a little too simplistic but overall a quality piece. I consider myself an armchair shrink and as of late have been thinking a lot about these sorts of topics. Definitely worth a read imo.

With independence comes the necessity to be responsible for ones actions. Sometimes it requires going it alone. People are afraid of failing with no one to catch them. The most independent people are loaners and don't give a rats ass about having others catch them. An independent person can not fear failure.

There is a hefty amount of jealousy involved. Ever notice when someone is successful or highly talented there is always a bunch losers ready to berate. Most of the time it has nothing to do with the talent or success. It's the "crabs in the bucket" syndrome. One crab reaches for independence, freedom from the bucket, the other crabs will drag it back. Do pardon if this went OT, long week, coffee has not hit my thinky parts yet.

Freedom means responsibility.
Responsibility means they they can't blame their faults on someone else.
Their ego's won't let them acknowledge their own faults.

Seems simple to me.
Of course most civilizations are destroyed by simple things.
