A newbie from the northern part of Franklin County here! I had my interview yesterday for my pistol permit. Any ideas how long it takes from here? Also, I'm hoping to get the pistol mostly for sport. I'm not a big shooter now (right handed, left-eye dominant, so I struggle with rifles - or maybe I'm doing something wrong), but I'm hoping I can be more competitive with my husband and the men-folk with a pistol. It helps that my husband doesn't have a permit, so he's lousy with a pistol. Any suggestions what I should get? I was originally looking at a .22, but with the scarcity of ammo, I don't want to buy something I can't readily load.

Also, any recommendations of good instructors/courses in the area? Because I'm not a hunter, I'd really like some safety pointers, as well as some shooting and maintenance training. Or do you think I'd be ok showing up at a local range and playing damsel in distress until I could get a knowledgable guy to help me? Or having trusted friends (law enforcement friends and otherwise) giving me an informal course?

Welcome aboard Sunny girl. I too am left eye dominant and right handed. I use my left hand to shoot a rifle and have gotten quite proficient. Still use my right hand for hand guns
I'm left-hand challenged. I've never been able to shoot a basketball left handed, could never cut fabric left handed and could never shoot a gun left handed. I'm unfortunately a righty with dumb eye alignment. :)

First off Welcome to the forum SunnyGirl, you could always check in with Dicks Country store in Churubusco, NY ‎ on US 11 they might have some 22lr ammo there.

Your not to awfully far from me I live in Rouses Point,NY and probably the closes to the Canadian border and the furthest North in NY State then anyone that is on the forum
I love Dick's! I think my plan, assuming I get my permit, is to take a day and hit gun shops from Moira to Plattsburgh to compare inventory and prices (I have a bad case of the cheaps). I have no idea what I'll like in terms of feel and handling.

I drive through Rouses Point en route to Burlington for shopping trips!

Your best bet is to buy a pistol from Dicks or Vans guns they seem to have the best prices on all there guns even though most of my purchases have been at Gander Mountain,I would recommend for your first pistol should be a Smith & Wesson M&P 22lr pistol it has a very nice trigger and is very light to handle but almost any 22lr pistol is great choice to have..
Vans? Where is that?
Thanks for the recommendations! I'll be sure to check out the S&W!

welcome, im in neighboring st lawrence county,
Thanks! I work in St. Lawrence County. I worked for years in Malone. I know they say, "if it's from Malone, leave it alone," but based on the news stories over the last few months in Massena, I'm thinking Massena is almost as bad, or worse. It's sad that our happy little towns, where people have always taken care of one another, have become so infested with people who can't find it in themselves to neither employ basic human morality nor contribute to society.

Sorry. Evening rant.
