I have my guns in their respective cases, then the ammo and mags in my range bag along with ear pro and any tools I may need.

We just put everything in the truck bed and drive up to the range. If I'm hunting I put everything in the back seat (extra cab) but I don't load any guns that is illegal unless your carrying concealed. Leaning a loaded gun against a vehicle is illegal. But to each his own I say.:beathorse:

The seperate places in the vehicle for ammo and rifle is not a NYS law. That is the federal law that protects you if you are traveling through different states. The loaded firearm definition above does not apply to rifles. For long guns it means (found in environmental law) you cant have ammo in magazine, tube, or chamber. They law that they will charge you with (assuming everything else is legal) is a environmental law found in the hunting section of the law.
