My hunting instructor from 30 years ago told us a story of how he fell while archery hunting and one of his broadheads went into his calf. if it wasn't for the tampons he carried into the woods with him he could have easily bled to death. After that story I always carried one in my backpack when out in the woods.
Corpsman handed out tampons to us when we went over to the sandbox to put in our IFAK's. Used to plug holes and stop the bleeding. Bullet and shrapnel holes I mean. My buddy got his nose broke over there. He looked pretty funny with the strings hanging from his nostrils. We teased him a bit, but they worked. I have kept tampons in all my med kits and passed on this tip since I got back in '04.
