I am looking at buying the ARES SCR. It does not come with sights, however it does have a rail on top for mounting.

What CHEAP optical sight would work, and how do I know what mount to look for?

Any help appreciated, all my past experience is iron sights or Weaver style mounts, never had one of those new fangled sighting systems.

Thanks

If your looking for a cheap good red dot check out primary arms. And if you wan magnification with that optic they offer a flip up magnifier for a decent price too. As far as back up iron sights there's a ton to choose from. I like one of magpul a I can't remember specifically the model number but I went with the ones like m-16's have because that's what I'm familiar with.

I have no complaints at all with my Sightmark QD reflex sight. I had to crank down the mounting screw a little extra, but that's about it. I easily zeroed it again this morning (my fault, long story) using paper plates as my target. I found it on sale awhile back for $70, but it normally runs around $100. I also run the Magpul MBUS flip up sights as a back up. They are rock solid and do not interfere with my use of the Sightmark.

Primary arms micro dot. My dad and friend have one and in two years of heavy shooting there have been no problems and zero had been retained. It is built like a tank. If you check youtube, there is a guy who freezes it, puts it in an oven, and bounces it on the floor.

They go for about 100 bucks. Get the one with the ar riser so you can cowitness iron sights.

I see a couple potential problems with using standard AR sights on the SCR. First, they are likely too tall to work well with the SCR stock, and secondly there is nowhere to mount the front sight.

True... Until the forend is replaced with a 12" free float rail system :)

in that case a PA micro dot or vortex sparc will work nicely!

Ps, the sparc comes with a 2x magnifier

Both the Sparc and the primary arms are clones of one another. If you go with no riser, it'll look like this.

As Brian said, you'd have to change the handguards to freefloat ones in order to have a front sight.

In my opinion, the red dot sight is enough. These sights are built tough. I'd just stock up on spare batteries. I do not know much about the Sparc, but with the Primary Arms one, the batteries last a few months of always being on selected in the medium setting. If you turn the sight off after use, it can last up to a year or more. Changing batteries does not affect the sight's zero.

I've had good luck with a Primary Arms red dot. Less than a hundred bucks, cheaper than a good BUIS. Their service is top notch too. I stripped the screw heads out on a scope mount and they sent new screws. Had a weapons light switch fail a year out of warranty and they sent a new one no charge.
