Renew sportsperson permit in Westchester County

I am hoping for some clarification. I hold a Westchester sports person permit. Not full carry. It will need to be renewed in 2023. Do I need to take the 18 hour course to renew my sportsperson license or is the course required ONLY if I want to remove that restriction and upgrade to full carry?
Thanks for any information.

Thanks.
i have read through this but see no mention of the sportsperson restriction permits. If I renew my sportsperson permit without taking the course do they automatically issue me a downgraded dwelling/premises permit?
To be more clear the new training requirement is only for concealed carry licenses as indicated in the FAQ and in the title of the law, concealed carry improvement act. Also your sportsmen should be good for 5 years not the three that is applied to CCW’s n
Thank you for clarifying. I was under the impression that there is no more target or sportsperson restricted carry conceal permits and it’s only full carry (take course) or premises/dwelling permit. If I can renew as normal and keep my sportsmen permit, that is great.
I don’t think they will let you keep it as a Sportsman. It will become a Premises license without the course. They changed mine when I added a pistol to it. Now it’s a Premises/Carry??? WTF?
Now here’s the tricky part, it seems as though different PLB’s have different interpretations on what the Premises license is. For example, I was told to treat it just like a Sportsman. I can carry loaded to and from the range. But no stopping and no hunting. Other PLB’s have stated hunting is ok, but it must not be loaded and must be locked in a case to and from the range. But according to the link posted from NYS, it’s for premises only and contradicts both PLB’s that I mentioned.
The simple version is no course and it becomes a premises license to be renewed every 5 years. Take the course and it’s a full carry with a 3 year renewal.

The issue with this is every county does things differently and you may be right that he will not be able to keep the sportsmens license, the only thing the training and all the other BS applies to is concealed carry. Your information is helpful and certainly relevant so thanks for sharing. I just don’t want to OP to think what was discussed above doesn’t apply anymore.
Thank you all for the information on these nonsense laws. Looks like I’ll be taking some classes or stuck with a premise license upon renewing.

It is “sportsman” not sportsperson!! What a bunch of progressive BS to use that term.

I was in Blueline this past weekend and asked a similar question (I got my permit back in February) and asked if I needed to go through the 18 hour course when my renewal comes up. The salesmen mentioned that as he understood things, anyone who hadn't taken the course when their permit comes up for renewal will be required to do so.

He suggested that I take it before my renewal and submit to the county for their records. Theoretically it should speed up the renewal process but then again, this is Westchester County...

Hope that helps
Your Sportsman License will be changed to a Premise license, wich renews every 5 years. If it its a concealed license you will need to take to renew it in 2023 and you will need to take the class first. SO you should clarify with Westchester with one they say you have.

NY State now requires a 16 hour, in person class to apply for a NY Concealed Carry license/Semi Auto Rifle Permit, this applies to ALL NY State residents.

New applicants must take this class. Residents of NYC, Suffolk, Westchester, and Nassau Counties – even if they already have a pistol license, must take this class to renew their NY State pistol license or to upgrade from a Premise License to a Concealed Carry License.

If you do not live in the above mentioned areas, you do NOT take the class to RECERTIFY, only people that RENEW take the class air least once.

James
Thanks for the clarification, I was going to take the class to amend my premise license to a concealed one and semi-auto rifle permit. Either way, taking the class doesn't hurt.

I received my Sportsman/Carry Permit from Suffolk County Sherriff's Office and just renewed it at 5yrs on 7/22. I read another passage which was the same as yours. If I return there if i purchase a Pistol, they will Ammend my Permit to say
Premisis/Carry ? which the Sherriff said is to be treated the same as Sportsman/Carry. I also read on a NYS site that my Permit is now only valid for 3 yrs from my 7/22 renewal. It seems everything I read is so confusing and convoluted it's
impossible to be sure of anything !!

Your permit is good for 5 years as a Premise/Sportsman/Carry, or whatever you want to call it. Once you take the class and receive your Concealed Carry, the renewal is 3 years. And you’re correct that once you add a pistol, they will print a new one that says Premises/Carry, and again it’s good for 5 years.
Make sure to tell them to add the Semi Auto endorsement when your there. In fact they will probably remind you to add it. All you need is $5 cash and sign the form. No other paperwork is involved. I was just there earlier this week.
I can’t say it enough how accommodating they are there.

Yes they are friendly and accommodating. 5 yrs ago when the Sherriff came to the house for my interview for the Pistol Permit, I noticed that his last name was Rose and told him I used to work for a Fuel company from 1988 to 1998 and worked with someone with that last name, He said " that was my brother" .and then told me he remembers me coming to his house to repair his furnace back in 1997. I thought , wow small world eh' ..Anyway I felt very comfortable talking to him and the interview went well. i just recently found out that he has retired BTW. Looks like I am going to keep my Sportsman/Carry Endorsement for now since I have enough firearms and no need to go there.
Thanks for the reply !!

I drove for a fuel company for many years as well. When my investigator came to my house, it turned out that we went to HS together. Yes, it is a small world.

To me this post isn’t very clear so I will add how I see it.
A concealed carry permit is renewed or recertified every three years after being issued. It’s not good for an initial 5 years then goes to three unless it was issued over 5 years ago already. Previous to that there was no recertification in most areas.
All other non carry permits are still good for 5 years and are renewed or recertified based on that.
There’s plenty of information on this so there should be no confusion other than it’s taking NYS ages to update the recertification date.
