Under federal regulation there is a classification of guns know as "firearms" this is encompasses factory made pistol gripped shotguns primarily. They are not shotguns however because they are not designed to fire from the shoulder and must not be less than 26" OAL.

Many have utilized this classification with ATF approval to construct a short barreled variant using a 14" barrel and a "Birdshead" grip with extends the overall length of an 870 or 500 to just over 26"

Does anyone know if this is acceptable in NY? I am not lawyer, but I have read the laws extensively and cannot find where this is a problem in NY.

My secondary question is, if "Firearms" are permitted in NY; can a "wrist brace" be utilized on an 870? The ATF has provided guidance on this as acceptable - NY however is a horse of a different color.

Firearms include Short Barreled Shotguns.

And yes, this has been discussed before. ;)

I wasn't able to find the previous discussion unfortunately.

if "firearms" are illegal in NY, then factory made pistol gripped shotguns would be illegal as well - which is not the case.

As long as the barrel is a certain length, and as long as the entire gun is above a certain length then the gun is legal everywhere except in N.Y.C.
I am not sure what the exact lengths are but you can easily look it up.

Firearms are illegal in NY.

No--certain types of firearms are illegal in NY.
According to the penal law an air rifle can be classified as a firearm.

Firearms are illegal in NY. Cut and dry on that. Even pistols are illegal. Permit holders are exempt.

My pistol grip only shotgun is an "Other" per the ATF, and not a firearm per NY's definition.
