Why so generous? Start with a $50 offer.
lol my kind of bargaining. but on topic : bargaining is part of selling / buying / trading outside the brick n motors... but as jeremy said it depends on the situation / item

I'm not sure if this is in regards to something specific on the forums (just got home, first post i'm reading) but $300 sounds like a reasonable starting offer for a $350 list. Meet at $325, everyone is happy.

Didn't happen here, just wanted to make sure my personal view of a reasonable offer wasn't off.

I wouldn't care if it was a non running porche for $350.

But yes that is reasonable. It would be fair in any form(multiples of 10 learned this in an economics class lol)
$35 = fair offer of $30
$350 = fair offer of $300
$3,500 = fair offer of $3,000
$35,000 = fair offer of $30,000
$350,000 = fair offer of $300,000
$3,500,000 = fair offer of $3,000,000
etc...

I think that's perfectly fine. You're not taking off a huge amount, especially if they're overpricing it. Like Jackson's and their $1800 KSG, I think they ended up selling it for $1200 or so. There was a show about a year or two ago where I brought a rare Enfield and was asking $1100 for it, marked it down to $800 after it was getting heavier, and someone came along and offered me $200 for it. That is lowballing. Ended up selling it shipped for $825 and I could hear the maniacal cackling across state lines.

I voted no ... that's not a lowball offer. I had t read the question a couple of times though. LOL ... is it lowball or reasonable? That one got me. I wanted to answer No because that's not too low to start with, but on the other hand, you asked if it was reasonable to which I would have to answer yes. I was trying like heck to find the "all of the above" choice.

Sounds reasonable depending on the actual value of the thing for sale. If the the known value its $400-$450 and somelisted it say at $350 for maybe a quicker sale I could see $300 as pushing the line to being a lowballer.

i always try to knock a few $'s off of a product I'm buying on a forum. the more it costs the more i try to bargain down. if I'm driving to meet the person a while away i tell them my travels cost me $$, also most used items are priced a little higher due to people wanting to bargain down so everyone thinks they Win. i do the same if I'm selling something and have to drive pretty far. tack a few extra dollars on for my time and gas. most people don't have a problem with it if its something they really want or really want to get rid of.

I always assume that when something is listed and not noted as "firm" that the seller has marked up the price in an effort to negotiate to the price they really want.

While $50 may seem like a lot, I agree it depends on the situation. If it was a 350 gun, and no one jumped on the asking price after a week or two, I wouldn't feel bad about throwing a 300 offer out there. They say no, lowest I'd go is X -- at which point you can continue negotiations or agree with the price and buy it.

Also, some people may take that "lowball" offer if no one else offers and they need to sell -- Case in point, my AR. I bought it for 1000, Had 5 30rd mags, $250 into a used holopoint sight, different stock & a lot of ammo. I was looking for $1650 (which I thought was reasonable for everything) however ended up taking 1200 because I needed the money

What pisses me off is people who essentially rant in their f/s post about 'no lowballin, i won't respond, im better than you, don't waste my time...etc". The thing about that is you are going to be on to check status anyway, so what's an extra click? Don't like the offer, don't respond. You just look like a douche actin all tough guy off the bat
