My understanding is pilots are go through the same screening that us mere mortals do at the airport. So how this guy was able to slip by with with a loaded .357 over the period of 2 days is a bit puzzling... and makes me wonder if this is something he's gotten away with until now.

I see Federal charges for him - but no State charges.
