Hello folks. I’m in Orange County. My fingerprints were done 06/18/2021 (I believe it took about 6-8 months to get an appt for the fingerprints) final interview with the sheriff department was 03/25/22. The letter of approval was dated 2/27/23, but I didn’t receive it until 03/13/23. Everyone including the clerks office when I called to inquire about status was super helpful and friendly. My letter doesn’t state if I was approved for full concealed carry or what. I guess I’ll find out when I go in to pick up the permit? Or would it be safe to assume because I applied for full concealed and if I got an approved letter then that’s what it got approved for? Thoughts?

There is no more restricted carry due to the bruen decision. And almost 2 years to get your permit is an absolute travesty..
The 18 hour course requirement is necessary for licensee’s with a restricted license still. In one county, people who completed the 18 course had to submit to a drug screening and provide social media accounts and a list of the people living at the home. The Suffolk Sheriff on the East End is giving the carry license immediately while SCPD and Nassau will make you wait months after submitting the certificate.

Do you think that’ll be applicable to me as well or not because I submitted my app way before the new requirements went into effect?

Bear in mind there are two types of permits in NYS. A full carry or concealed carry and a premise permit.
Being new familiarize yourself with the concealed carry improvement act that violates your rights horribly but is the law of the land in NYS for now.

Orange County has different Judges like many other counties in New York which will either be issuing a carry or restricted. I am hearing about people in downtown state counties like Rockland County get the restrictions lifted after the Bruen decision by simply getting an amendment for Full Carry No Restrictions. The training requirement under the CCIA is for all new pistol license applicants.

Thank you so much everyone for your help. Hickok: if I’m given a restricted one , can I file for carry amendment on the spot or what would the process look like?

As he said it won’t be restricted since the SC said you can’t do administrative restrictions anymore and only two types are granted, either premise or concealed carry.

It’s hard to say what the process is because every county is handling it differently. If you do not have a CCW currently as of 9/1/2022 you will need the enhanced training of 16 hours of seat time and 2 hours of live fire training. Most counties are making you take the training before applying but a few let you get it while going through the process.
I suggest you get familiar with the CCIA. It seems Orange County allows you to do it in process but you already applied.

I do not see anything about upgrading from premise to carry on their web site only about new applications. They do have the new CCIA parameters listed on the application process but the question is what did they use as a cut off. It’s best to call or email them to get the answers you seek unless you know someone that went through this process at a very similar timeframe as you. Your permit should say premise or concealed carry but I’ve never seen one from Orange County so I could be wrong. So much is county specific.

CCIA link. Thankfully you’re not in one of the NYC Burroughs or surrounding that require a renewal.

A right delayed...is a right denied.

Hochul and company, along with county folks who have not been 'gun friendly' have basically created a
chilling effect on the 2A in NYS. The 2nd circuit will hear 5 cases on Monday morning at 10am...the future of law abiding gun owners in NY hangs in the balance of these legal efforts. I can tell you first hand the work from a team of dedicated attorneys has been impressive...but the costs are daunting. Every gun owner or anyone who believes in the Bill of Rights should be supporting the process. Please donate to Gun Owners of America New York today...we need your support!

If you are not part of the solution...well, you know the rest.

While I agree with what you said we will see what happens. Our rights will still be denied or delayed in NYS no matter what. With the NYSP taking over the NICS checks and ammo background checks expect more interference IMO. I have stopped buying ammo in NYS now that it’s all tracked because who knows when they will say oh this guy bought too much and is arming up or is a threat.
This state does a lot wrong and a lot to discourage us gun owners.

Not to mention, in blatant violation of the law. But this is NY, where the government is free to violate the law at will and rub your face in it to boot.

UPDATE: My permit was issued as carry concealed/unrestricted. Pretty smooth I was in and out in Goshen. Probably 5 minutes or so. Pic taken sign this sign that and done. Only thing tho…she asked me to look over the permit for accuracy…my employer is wrong, well it has my prior employer that I was with 2 years ago when I submitted the application, but I did update my info with the sheriff department doing the pre work and stuff but the lady said sometimes they don’t provided to the county clerk i guess or whatever. She said when I buy a gun and do the amendment to just fix it then…do y’all think that will be ok or could it be a gotcha trickery situation that I could be in violation coz my info on the permit is not up to date? Idk how long it will be until I buy a gun so idk if I should just do the amendment now though.

I think you’ll be fine. I would just document it on the paperwork they sent you and initial it as today for proof you told them. You could take a picture with you phone as proof it was done the day of as well but I do t think they really care about that stuff.
Glad it’s a CCW.
