Hello,

I am new to skeet and clays and I purchased my first shotgun this year. I bought a Mossberg 500 pump which is not the best for skeet and clays. I was wondering what are some suggestions for a good over/under less than $1000. I want to upgrade. Also, any suggestions on where I should sell my current shotgun?

Read this if you are new to clays:
Amazon.com: Breaking Clays (9781904057437): Chris Batha: Books

Getting a good understanding of exactly what you want your shotgun to do. As for your Mossberg, keep it and set it up for home defense. Save your pennies while reading and figure out what you think you're gonna want/need.

I give this advice on experience. I did the same thing: Bought an 870, shot some clays, wanted an over under for clays, bought a POS Condor, converted my 870 for HD, read the book, saved my pennies and bought ANOTHER over under for what I wanted to shoot.

Look into used Browning Citori. The most versatile length is 30" with screw-in chokes so you can shoot Skeet, Trap, and Sporting Clays. They are all fun. Where and what are you shooting. Beretta is a better option IMO but it would cost you more money. A cheaper and a good shotgun is the Lambert. Whatever you pick, you should not be too careful about the price as you will spend much more money on ammo and targets. Good luck and have fun.

I'm going to go in the opposite direction here ..... A Legacy Arms Inc. imported gun called Escort!!! It shoulders faster than any gun I've ever shot at the skeet events and the price is WAY less than a "better known named" used gun. They come with changeable chokes and recoil pad spacers to adjust LOP and are dead on!!! Don't overlook the "lesser priced" guns and mistake them for "lesser quality" 'cause that ain't the case with the Escort O/U. (at least with my experience with them) Just another option for ya. I had one and wish I didn't have to sell it to pay bills. :( (Many shooters thought I was using a Browning ... it looks and performs that good!!)

Here's the Davidson's Gun Genie results for dealers around me .... look at Firefly Firearms price!!!

Everbody has their preferences, go handle them to see how they fit and buy according to your budget. If you can afford one and keep the Mossberg do it and decide if you want to sell it later or sell and use the extra cash to buy a little more gun. Shoot several if you can to see what suits you better. I snuggle up to a shotgun more than other people so I find a backbored Browning less apt to push my thumb knuckle into my cheek as hard as my non back bored Beretta. Fit, shooting and desired features will drive your final decision.
If you decide to sell the Mossberg, start here.
Good luck
