So I have a friend that want me to go deer hunting with him this year so I am looking into buying a rifle preferable in the under $400 price range. Does any one have any suggestions for a good rifle that could be used mainly for deer that they would suggest for a first time hunter?

.243, or a .308. Possibly in a Savage or the Stevens model 200. I think I paid $330 out the door on my Stevens 200. But you have to then buy a scope ontop of that price that I paid. They also sell them with scopes already on them for a little bit more $$.

A Savage Axis is a great place to start...! Good price for a quality rifle......You should to easily put a scope and rings on one and stay under your $400 limit.....I also would reccomend a .308 0r .270......But a .243 has killed a ton of deer, and then if you want to shoot chucks or coyotes the .243 is great for them as well.....Here is a link so you can look over the Savage Axis line...... Or this Remington 770......It comes with a mounted and boresighted 3x9 scope on it......MSRP is $373.00 so you should be able to find one around $325.00..... Centerfire Rifle - Model 770 - Remington Centerfire Rifles

If you can hunt with iron sights get a Mosin Nagant if you are trying to save some money, and if you look around sometimes you can find a Mosin Nagant PU sniper for 350ish, that will come with a scope for you.

I would avoid the remington 770 as they are very very cheaply made, sloppy bolt, cheap plastic, that being said they do shoot great and Dick's had them on sale last season for $279.99 with the 3x9 already set up.

I have the Rem 770 .308. Very accurate with lots of different brands of ammo that I have run through it. Definitely a poor man's tack driver with a halfway decent scope. The drawback of the 770 is definitely the bolt. Bolt is a bit sloppy and occasionally binds when you cycle it too hard. I've even pulled the bolt right out of the receiver while cycling rounds. Contacted Remington about the bolt coming out of the receiver - their customer service is top notch so they sent me a new bolt overnight free of charge. If you search Google there is a fix for the bolt binding issue.

That being said, I will likely look to replace my 770 with a 700 or better quality Browning model in the future. I haven't heard about any issues with the Savage rifles so they're also another good baseline choice.

Keep in mind Onondaga county doesn't allow center fire rifles for deer hunting, it's shotgun only, not sure if you had planned to hunt inside your county or not.

Rifle, Shotgun, and Bow Areas - NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation

I'll be rolling out with a mossberg 500 for this season, it's the field/deer model. Probably going with Hornady SST slugs.

For some reason I always thought cayuga was one of the shotgun only counties, but I guess it's not. I may pick up a bolt 30-06 in the future. :D

Dont forget the Remington 760/7600 pumps!Great guns and found used on alot of sites on the PA side of us.Just picked up an older model 760 30-06 a couple months ago for $325,and really like them over a slower shooting bolt gun.If not that way go with a Savage/Stevens 200 bolt gun, cheap and work/shoot great...

If you are hunting white tail, the SKS is a wonderful carbine with little tono recoil and a semi auto action for quick follow up shots if needed. To be legal in NY rifle hunting areas all you need to do is block the fixed 10 rd mag so that 5 rds is the max it will hold.

Savage Axis is a very accurate rifle.. They are on te light side. I would go with a 243 and a good quality ammo. The 30/06 has a lot of recoil.
I didn't find it any worse than using a 12g slug gun. Certainly more range though. Just personal experience (with a mossberg bolt 30-06).

well yeah I was talking about bullet speed...26 inch barrel vs a 16... I have never needed a follow up shot:cute:

a 760 probably weighs 7 pounds mine weighs 11...don't bet I won't be back on target before you recover from the recoil:cute:

Easy,it never has to leave your shoulder while shooting!Sure some bolt guys leave it on there shoulder while chambering a round but most dont. And even if they do pumps are still much faster and easy to picture it in your mind, but maybe you thought I was talking bullet speed?
Years ago I saw a friend of my family shoot a bolt action faster than a family member with a pump. AND the guy was an excellent shot.

I can't believe that most people don't leave the weapon in their shoulder while working the bolt, unless it's a short stock coupled with a long action or something so that it becomes physically impossible. I think my grandpop would kill me if he ever caught me working a bolt with the weapon down ;)
