I ordered a cheap UTG Weaver / Picatinny rail setup for my Mossberg 500 20ga to get an idea if I would even like the reflex sight before I went and dropped serious money on a good quality reflex sight. However after taking it out shooting last weekend, I could not get the sight dialed in. At 25 yards I was shooting roughly 1 foot high (I was using birdshot so it is only approximated). The sight was fully adjusted "down" and would not go any further... and just for ****s and giggles, I tried bringing it "up" and it continued to get worse so I know I was adjusting it the right way. Anyone have any ideas why it might not be allowing it to sight in correctly? Would moving the sight further down the rail (towards the muzzle) change it that much? Right now I had it almost all the way to the butt side of the rail. I'm a little discouraged because I had to drill and tap new holes in the gun because the screws supplied with the rail were too large for my factory holes... so I would really like to get this working properly.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I was hoping to get a general idea if I want to go with an open reflex sight vs a "scope" style red dot sight which is why I went with the super cheap just to get a rough idea... And I wouldn't mind spending a bit more but now I'm worried that I'll run into the same issue if I get a better quality sight...

The super cheap sight is the problem, I did the SAME thing I had the SAME setup as you are describing. My cheapo red dot sight shot far far far to the left, so I adjusted it to the right and it shot farther to the left, so then I adjusted it to the left and the dot was so far left I had to look at my shotgun at an angle to see the damn thing, it's the sight, no way around it you will have to buy a decent sight, if you don't like it sell it to someone for what you bought it for, or if it was from a local store return it within 30 days, either way it is the cheap sight that isn't working for you.

BTW I was sighting mine in with slugs, expensive lesson.

Yea, I figured I would get it close with the birdshot and then zero it in (as much as you can with a shotgun) with a few slugs. So it looks like I'll be getting a better sight what I get some extra money... I also have to get a new handguard since the one I got didn't fit either.... lesson learned for buying cheap stuff... lol
