Mangano expected to support Cuomo Thursday October 2, 2014 6:13 PM By Celeste Hadrick
After Republican Larry Rockefeller, a nephew of former Republican Gov. Nelson Rockefeller, endorsed Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday, don't be surprised if Republican Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano soon announces his support for the Democratic governor's bid for re-election.
Cuomo told reporters that he is planning to reach out to moderate Republicans to back his campaign for a second term. Nassau GOP insiders say Mangano will be one of the Republicans who will say they are voting for Cuomo this November.
Mangano and Cuomo have had a close relationship since Mangano defeated incumbent County Executive Thomas Suozzi, a Democrat, in 2009.
In mid-2010, Mangano held a news conference with Cuomo, who was making his first bid for the governor's office, to tout Cuomo's property tax cap plan - after Cuomo campaign workers told two Democratic county lawmakers to leave the event.
The next year Cuomo drove his blue 1975 Corvette in Mangano's first "Cruise to the Show" automobile parade even though Democratic legislator Kevan Abrahams of Freeport had called for the show to be cancelled because of its expense.
Mangano has since supported every Cuomo budget while Cuomo attended Mangano's second term inauguration in January, praising the county executive's "extraordinary leadership."
Meanwhile, Nassau Republicans have given a cold-shoulder to Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino.
A Mangano spokesman did not return a request for comment.
