Hey guys, I'm relatively new to shooting, and I'm trying to find a place to shoot in my area...

Right now I have my eye on Pompey Rod and Gun or Baldwinsville Rod and Gun, anyone know if they're any good?

Also looking for input on other places in the area around Syracuse

I'm a student, so I really just want a cheap place that doesn't care if I don't go to meetings and stuff. If there's a free place to shoot that is in state land or something like that, that would be perfectly fine with me, I just don't want to get in trouble with the DEC or state police.

I'm mostly interested in shooting rifle, although I do archery as well.

I am a member at Baldwinsville. I like the club. Nice and well maintained ranges. The social environment has been positive everytime I visit. Check out The Nedrow Sportsmen club which is approximately 25 minutes south of Syracuse. 81 south to Lafayette exit and approximately 7 miles down 20 west. Nice small club that has made several facility improvements. Ranges are not busy. More improvements are in the works, Nedrow has a website or you can message me.

Look up DEC Land near you on the DEC website and call/email the DEC representative for the region and ask where you can shoot. Let the representative know that you understand the rules for shooting on state land (no breakable targets, not shooting within I think 500 feet of an occupied building, and not shooting at trees). Sometimes the DEC people won't know or help, but sometimes they will give you several locations close to you that you didn't know about. It's free to shoot on state land, often closer than a range, and worse that can happen is that they say no.
