I was just at a bar in Chehalis, WA where the conversation was very anti-capitalist. The bartender stated that he was pro-communist. I mentioned the fall of the Berlin Wall and he replied that capitalism was going to fall too. This guy is looking at the current recession as a vindication. The bar owner then jumped in that capitalism was everything wrong with the country and that things need to change. I pointed out that being a business owner makes her a capitalist. She then said that politics should not be discussed in a bar. I did not change their minds, but I made a point that she could not refute. There is some kind of cognitive dissonance. What I have noticed is that the liberals have been flaunting their Marxism since Obama was elected. Is it the same in New York?

I'm not really surprised by the bar owner's response. All of the west coast is a liberal haven, its not just CA.

NY is basically split into 2 areas. NYC and immediate surrounding counties and the rest of NY state, often referred to as "Upstate".
The NYC area is very liberal. Due to the population density in NYC (translates to more representation in the state legislature), is why we have some of the most oppressive gun laws in the US here.

The "Upstate" area is a mixed bag. It can be separated into the bigger cities (Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Albany, and Binghamton) and the rest of the "Upstate" area. These cities range from moderately liberal to very liberal. It doesn't help that all of NY is very unionized, which lends to a democratic/liberal lean. Out side of the "Upstate" cities the rest of the state is republican/conservative leaning.

One interesting phenomenon that I have observed on numerous occasions is people who express openly liberal political views yet own guns get all pissed off when anti-gun legislation gets pushed through. Yet it is the very politicians that they say that they love are doing to them. To me I don't know how they can love the liberal politicians and their legislation/policies yet be upset when those same people they love are trying to take their guns.

As far as folks I typically know and meet, I would consider the large majority of those that a lot of people on this site would damn into the category of 'evil liberals' to generally actually be pretty normal, intelligent, and well rounded people. Most of them are really libertarians who just don't know it, with the exception of their commonly uninformed and uneducated views on gun ownership. Like anything of course though there are however plenty of extremists. Of those, I've found that they will strongly correct me if I call them communist. I couldn't even tell you how many times I've heard the line , "I prefer to consider myself a socialist". Followed immediately by a face-palm from me.

True. I've met many who claim to hold pretty extreme liberal ideals, but when pressed, it turns out they don't really know much about such topics. It's as if they heard their teacher say it once and decided "yeah, that sounds cool! Imma say that too!"

In a recent survey I saw over 53% of democrats have socialist views (meaning they are socialists). At large , the democratic party platform sounds very socialist. They believe that society has an obligation to take care of the less fortunate for the sake of society. More government control of schools, healthcare, big business, etc.... this sure sounds like socialism to me. I think many people that consider themselves democrats don't realize what the entire party platform stands for. The leftist media preaches equality for all and who could argue with that, except in order to achieve that the government has to control everything... the leftist media leaves that part out so that they can control the sheeple.
