There's only one way this ends up.. and it's not pretty. You cannot educate all of the inner city kids or enough of them to make a difference. Some are willing to climb out of the hell holes and thankfully, they generally are supported by their families. Unfortunately, they are ridiculed and bullied and suffer untold amounts of daily psychological and physical agony.

There's only one way this end up..

This was a really good read. Somethings I would disagree with is the classification of "blacks" should be reclassified as "inner city blacks" as this type of behavior is seen in numerous urban centers, but not outside.

I've said it once and I'll say continue to say it: It's their culture.

I have to agree^^^

Recently a young lady contacted me to see if I had any freelance design work available. Long story short, she found her way to my office and is an attractive, 27 year old black girl. I can't stress enough what a pleasure it is to have her around. Turns out she was adopted by a white family, along with her sister(s), went to a predominately white country school and married a white guy last year. (who ironically is at a drug rehab center in Saranac Lake).

This girl is a winner. Other than her obsession with twitter, she is going to be a success at whatever she does in life. Being self-employed, I'm trying to find a way we can hook up (professionally) as her goals match mine.

The article is depressing as it is not a "black" thing, but an environment thing. Urban areas are just magnets for the dregs of society. I've seen the dregs from my country H.S. end up in the cities pushing shopping carts and having a crackhead smile. Some of the kids are able to escape their doomed urban existence, Dr. Benjamin Carson is a perfect example, but most will sadly be just another statistic in a crumbling society.

This has to be one of the more depressing articles I have read in the past month. Holy #$%^!

I agree, culture trumps everything. The cycle of violence, crime and poverty will continue regardless of how much money is spent on urban schools as long as the behavior the author identified is tolerated.

I fear for the future. What happens when the debt of this country finally forces a change in spending?

While i agree with an awful lot of this, i think the reality isn't white vs black.... it is civilized parents vs POS parents.
I agree with this. For all those who think avoiding the inner cities by staying out in very rural areas - I have a word of caution. Numbers wise, there are more poor rural whites than poor inner city blacks. Many of them are on some sort of financial assistance, i.e. welfare. I have seen crazy rural white kids. What do you think will happen to them if the checks stop coming?

What a horrible story. Sounds like a miniature version of what goes on in prison. Why not her win the "ghetto lottery" for how she was treated.

10 years ago I left public education after teaching high school mathematics in a large urban school district for 23 years. I have experienced the behaviors described by the author first hand. Now I operate boilers, AHU's, generators and other types of equipment. I have never looked back with remorse.

Excellent commentary, guys. I agree, it is much more a case of cultural rot, brought about in part by a lack of good parenting and also a belief that they are owed something.

(Which just so happens to be something that is inherently encouraged by big government, and the liberal mentality, that bigger government can fix everything.)

With the inner city culture the way it is and the general dumbing down of Americans, I see big problems in the future. Watch the movie Idiocracy to find out what I'm talking about. We need a greater emphasis put on education. Telling kids "if you want a good job and lots of money you need to go to college" isn't helping. K-12 is where the emphasis should be placed. Hey kids, you want to have a good job and not live in the getto? Stay in school and don't just get good grades, but learn something.

The one thing I disagree with about this story is it being a "black" thing.

It's an environmental disease, not a race disease.

The same **** can be found in many low income, white trash trailer parks.
You will never ever find this stuff in all white schools or trailer parks. Did you even read the article? This is 1st hand experience and her conclusions are 100% correct. Of course agreeing with the author is 'super racist' so I see a lot of tip toeing in this thread.

It's truly sad that this state of affairs exists in our country. As others above have stated, it's not so much a racial thing as a cultural one. This is the ultimate outcome of what almost 50 years of "the war on poverty" has done. It's created generations (yes, plural) of families and people who are dependent on the system and who learn how to use and abuse it. No one is getting lifted out of poverty from much of these welfare programs. Because of them they're getting stuck in them.

Just to reiterate it's not entirely a black thing. My barber is very active in the Methodist Church in our community (mostly white) and helps run the food pantry that the Church operates. He's seen three generations (grandparents, parents, children) come to that food pantry and take stuff out. The grandparents came with their kids. who grew up and had their own kids, who are now just reaching puberty and will almost certainly be bringing their babies. This is over the span of 30+ years. There were many opportunities for them to pull themselves out of poverty but they chose not too (rather spend the bucks on booze and drugs and get free food from charities or the government than spend on things that would improve their lives).

It's truly a sad state of affairs we find ourselves in. Maybe I'm compassionless, but why are we subsidizing people who can't support themselves? In nature, you survive or you die. No one is offering you a helping hand.

Well, that is what the "liberals" will label it. "Racist". I debated whether I should post this story, but decided that we are better than that. We can talk about race without being racist. So if by tiptoeing, you mean that a major element of this story is "black culture" that some will read as racist terminology, I would add my own personal experience with inner city life. I lived in the South End of Albany for a while, and one of the worst neighbors on my block was white, as in "white trash". Another white family I had the misfortune to be acquainted with for a short time after I moved out into the country was just as bad, scamming the system for everything they had, besides stealing things at every opportunity, and blaming it on anyone but themselves.

It is my personal opinion that the welfare mentality has led to what I refer to as the modern Democrat version of slavery. If you are relying on government for subsistence, you are a slave to the government. You are a slave to poverty. You will never have an opportunity to better yourself if you just sit back and let the government take care of you. You will always be poor, and will always live in poverty. You will never have an opportunity for a raise (other than a cost of living adjustment), you will never have an opportunity for a promotion, or the ability to move on to a better job, or the ability to contribute to society instead of being a drain on society, and no opportunity to prepare yourself for future financial self support.

Those with this welfare mentality are too ignorant of just how much of a slave they really are, which is why the "War on Poverty" will never end, and will continue to get worse. As long as these politicians keep upping the handouts to placate their voters, the recipients will have no desire to lift themselves up and out. There is no incentive for them, as they have everything they need to survive, and it breeds nothing but more laziness.
