I saw that a machete is considered a dangerous weapon in NY.

Dangerous weapon usually refers to the intent of use. Machetes are sold in many stores and the way I understand it simply possessing one is fine but you wouldn’t want to walk around the neighborhood with it as that could be seen as a threat.

Possessing one with the intent to use unlawfully against another is now a misdemeanor.
