I bought a Saiga sporter to start the build. Some people think I'm crazy wanting to turn a semi auto in a bolt action. I don't really care. I want an Ak 74 clone.

In regards to parts, I can legally purchase stock sets with pistol grips, muzzle brakes, and bayonet lugs, right? just so long as I don't put them on a semi automatic rifle? I want to buy the parts, then I want to send the parts and the rifle to a gunsmith (which I found who is willing to do it), have him build it, and bring the rifle back here.

There are no laws I would be violating here, right?

Nope no laws as long as the rifle is compliant (not Semi) you have no worries. You can get Brand new romainian barrels without the gasport drilled but, the everything else including the trunion installed.

Awesome. that's great to hear. The only reason I asked was because I saw this website selling Ak 74 parts kits and they said they didn't ship them to NY. it didn't make sense to me because there was no receiver or barrel that came with the kit.

Anyway thanks man

We have Mini 14's as straight pulls in the Uk. They need alot of work done to make them extract reliably and getting the accuracy right is the same problem as a semi auto one.

I'd keep rifles like that as semi auto's simply because that's what they're meant to do and we never used them as straight pulls by choice. If USMC is interested I might be able to put him in the direction of someone that might through something they're doing be able to help me achieve something like a semi auto AK74 but out of the definition of a semi auto. I can't guarantee anything but its worth a shot.

How do you plan to block the gas port? It would seem to be the best and easiest way to get a straight pull AK. On an AR type I think it would be a bit simpler - there is already a pin through the block that holds the gas tube, so you can just pin in something solid into the block. On an AK, the piston rides inside the tube, and the block is pinned to the barrel (like the AR in most cases). Seems like it is going to take some modification of the gas block on the AK to get the gas shutoff. Just wondering how this is usually done.

I just remembered, atlantic firearms is doing some straight pull AK pistols for CA as a result of SSE 2. Once they get into CA as far as anyone can tell they're good to convert them to semi themselves, but they are straight pull so a similar method to how they're straight pull could work for you.

It's doable, any maybe they could point you in the direction to make a straight pull rifle.

the replacement barrel I ordered for one I was having rebarreled was not drilled, I had to do it myself. The block is a lot different on the AK is is basically a block of steel with a hole drilled in it at an angle that allows the gas to expand into the cavity to push the piston. It is no where close to being machined as precise as the AR gas block is.

As far as rapidity of fire is concerned, I've thought that doing this with an AK would make it similar to the straight pull Swiss K31, no?
Pretty close. It is a little different because of the pistol grip. I have built some straight pull ARs with the side charging uppers.

Have we ever definitively been able to rule out a tig-welded magazine lock?

If a mag lock were tig-welded on to the triggerguard, and you needed a tool to remove the mag, in practice it is not a detachable magazine, and not readily restorable (I know readily restorable is a BATF standard not NYS standard).

Stop dreaming like a fool. ATF says, "Once a full auto, always a full auto." NYS takes the same approach to semiautos. My local gunshop in Guilderland, J&J, was put out of business because they were turning noncompliant AWs into compliant AWs. If they can even begin to screw you for some imaginery infraction, that is nothing more than a fanciful legal construction of the gun laws here in NYS, you will spend a great deal of time and money to get out of it, while they spend your tax dollars sticking it to you. BTW They will have many great nights out having dinner on your dime and yukking it up, while you wonder how you're going to pay your legal bills. Jack's Oyster House on State St in Albany does a huge business on your tax dollars. We have scum for government in this state, and it's our own fault.

If it can't fire semiautomatically he's fine. And it can't, what he wants is an AK with no working gas system, it literally won't be there. Not my particular cup of tea but whatever.

No one eats at Jack's anymore. They go to 677 Prime.

Relax and take a valium.

I even called the NY gun laws hotline to verify it was legal. I talked to DSI staff (where I bought the Saiga) and the guys there did work on straight pull AR 15s. They CONVERTED semi auto neutered AR 15s to bolt action AR 15s with "assault weapon" features.

if your gonna at least give me false information, do it without being a dick

NY Safe Act states nowhere that you can't convert a semi auto (non "assault weapon) into a bolt action gun with "assault weapon" features.
