Consultant/freelancer in what line of work? Painting? General Contracting? IT? Music? Fire systems? I'd say use the following: <General Area of Work> Consultant.

Self Employed.

Put what you want it to say. I tried to put Domestic Engineer on my application and the clerk laughed when I told her my job description. Now every time I show my permit at the gun store, I get laughed at cause I let her change it to House Husband.

It depends, I am in between work so sometimes I am not self employed but employed with someone. But I do computer security, telecom, and systems administration. Lots of stuff, I go where work is promising to avoid getting laid off.
