I'm new and apologize in advance if putting the question in wrong parts of the forum...

If the model of handgun I'm interested in can only be found through online auction with high capacity mag, is it legally possible to do a transfer through dealer, sell the high capacity mag and then buy 10 round mags. Or no NY dealer will do this at all...

No. The standard capacity mags cannot be shipped to NY. The seller could transfer the pistol minus the mags though.

I've ordered pistols with standard capacity magazines. The vendors shipped them without the magazines and I had to purchase low capacity magazines on my own. You cannot have standard capacity magazines shipped to you in New York.

Not entirely true- most sellers will not ship the full cap mag to ny but technically an ffl can possess full cap mags so they could take delivery and then reduce the cap to 10 or less prior to transferring the mag to you

The seller could ship the handgun with standard cap mags to your FFL (if the FFL agrees to accept them - there is no law saying they cannot). You personally could not take possession of the mags from the FFL unless you are LEO, but the FFL could either buy them from you or sell them on consignment, although that is their choice.

Legally the FFL can ship standard cap mags in and out of state, and sell them to LEO inside NY as well. Talk to your FFL and see if they are willing to accept the transfer and transfer the gun to you without the mags.

OP this^^^^……unfortunately here in NY no one needs 10 bullets to kill a deer or anything else makes us all safe...so says cumhol.

Draw up a message of necessity describing a lot of redundant mumbo-jumbo that has no basis in reality on how you must have that specific magazine, and have it hand delivered to l'il andy at the executive mansion in the dead of night on January first. It worked for him. Oh wait, he probably wont be there, one can hope.

Agreed..... ya ened up with solid answers here plus Standard Capacity Mags is the proper nomenclature. Whatever you do... don't ask about Magazines vs Clips.... Oh lord.
