Fundamentals, Accuracy and Consistency
Marksmanship is divided into two components, Accuracy and Consistency.

Accuracy being what a rifle system is capable of holding or grouping.
Accuracy will be based on the following categories or "Pillars":
· Quality of Equipment (components, design and manufacture or build)
· Quality of Ammunition
· Care & Maintenance

The second component of marksmanship is Consistency, this is YOU;
Consistency is the greater component of the two. This again is broken down into two sub categories for one to study and train.
First is how one Manipulates or "Drives" the rifle system:
· Shooting Position
· Sight Alignment
· Sight Picture
· Breath Control
· Trigger Control
· Recoil Management
· Follow Through
Each one of these should be studied and trained until you are consistent with them. Make a check list of shot sequence and use it. Do not make it too complex but rather focus on the fundamentals. Ever heard "Amateurs practice until they get it right, professionals practice until they do not get it wrong."
Second within Consistency is one's ability to read and judge Environmental Factors and understand how to adjust for it:
· Range estimation
· Wind reading and ballistic knowledge
· Lighting conditions
· Mirage
· Atmospheric Conditions and their effects

Now the majority of "bad shots" are caused by shooting position errors and trigger control issues. The second part of consistency (environmental factors), in whole is not an exact science. The biggest factors for error here are range estimation and bad wind calls. In Long Range and Extreme Long Range shooting once a firing solution is made place a dis-connect of sorts between the two Consistency sub categories. As the shooter send the best round you can down range using the first part, if a miss is spotted and a quality correction given send another as soon as possible before the down range conditions change. If your second round is a hit, well you the shooter just sent two quality rounds down range, you just needed to correct the environmental part. If you are shooting a match with sighters, well then the environmental category becomes more of reading changes in it rather than establishing it in the first place.
