Big fan of the Pharaoh Lake region near Schroon. It's free, but if you're gonna be in one spot for more than 3 nights, DEC wants you to log in with them and let them know how long you're gonna be there. I move around to the different ponds back there with my Hornbeck and fish till my hearts content. Never seen anybody else whenever I'm out there. There is a nice little lean to on Oxshoe pond.

I'm a hammock camper, so I dont really care about a pre-built shelter and like not having to worry about if there is an area clear and level and big enough for a tent. The more trees the better!

There's also some trail around Cranberry Lake and I've camped out there at some the ponds (Curtis, Dog, Center and the like). Most of them have been fished out by the beavers, but it's quiet and pretty up there.

That map is missing a LOT, especially in the Adirondacks.

This year will be my first all hammock year (I think) ....
The Adirondacks .... we did the great range last summer (Upper Wolf Jaw ,Armstrong ,Basin ,Lower Wolf Jaw ,Gothics ,Sawteeth
Saddleback ,Haystack ,Marcy ) ... I think thats all of them .... was disappointing to see so many people on Marcy .... though the rest were void of humans ! Going back this year to check out the Gothics and Basin a little more and the Dix area.
Picked up an ENO hammock and some associated accessories for it ... we'll see how I like it. .... it is way lighter than most of the tents I have ...

I'll never go back to a tent if I'm sleeping alone. My blackbird is way more comfortable than any sleeping pad I've slept on.
