Hey everybody.

I was researching the other day about getting an Arizona, Utah, or Florida ccw. I contacted the Flordia Department of Ag. (the ones who issue the permits). They informed me that to get the permit one of the acceptable forms of training is as follows: "ny hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission or a similar agency in another state." I asked if New York states hunter safety course (the one we all had to take to get a hunting license) would suffice and I received the following statement back in the Email.

I am not condoning this to be somebody only training but if this gives us grounds to get the CCW I think that would be a good thing for NYers.

Here is the link: Acceptable Training Documentation / Concealed Weapon License / Licensing / Divisions & Offices / Home - Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services

Has anybody done this?

I used my NY Pistol Permit Safety course and had no issues, as long as the Certified NRA instructors number is present on your certificate you are good. I had my hunters education cert as well but did not use it on my application. Got my permit with no issues either will work fine.

Glad to hear. My pistol permit class was taught a deputy at the sheriffs department. We didn't get a certificate or anything like that. So I will either have to use my hunters education cert alone or wait till I take a CCW class. I just have to get the finger print cards and the cash and Im all set. The application took an entire 5 mins to fill out lol.

I took the NRA Basic Safety (without the live fire portion). Do you know if that will suffice for FL?

When I received my FL CCW Permit I was told that I needed a course that included "Live Fire".
I suspect that some people have in fact received their FL permit by submitting proof of training that did not include live fire. Though the training certificate would not indicate one way or the other. If the certificate has an NRA instructor number and signature and did not include live fire it may slip through.
I say this because I see courses offered that give permts for AZ, UT and FL that do not have participation in live fire as part of the course.

Hey DD, thanks for the 411. The reason I asked is because the certificate I received from the NRA instructor has both the classroom line for the instructors signature as well as another line (he left blank) labeled Live Fire. It becomes blatantly obvious that the live fire portion was not completed. Based on your assessment it appears I'll be out of luck.

Sorry if I am the bearer of bad news. Let me add this. I applied for and received my FL permit within the last four months. I already had my resident NYS and non resident UT and AZ. I have had them for several years. I never bothered with FL because I never visit the state and it ws the most expensive. Now the little Lady says 'Lets spend next winter in Florida instead of going to Arizona." So that is the plan and the only reason I went for the FL permit. The only State that FL gains for me is Florida itself. If you can live without the FL permit just do the AZ and UT. Keep in mind that all the States firearms laws are very dynamic and changing all the time. For instance I now have an additional permit ( four total ) but I am covered in less States than I was two years ago when I only had three permits. I travel a lot and believe me it can be difficult to stay on top of all the firearms laws for all States.

Technically, FL law basically says if an instructor signs off on a NRA course he is attesting that he witnessed you handle and "discharge" the gun. It doesn't say it needs to be a pistol so a basic rifle class could work but most courses offered in NY are also used for the NY permit. The problem of course is you (generally) cannot handle a pistol or fire it until you have your permit. I recently took a NY/FL/UT class for FL/UT permits and instructor was NRA certified and said that he has spoken with FL AG about this and advised that he trains with a SIRT (laser) pistol due to NY law. He was never given a straight answer but claims all of his certificates are accepted. I received my FL permit but also included course certifications that included live fire, so not sure if his course was accepted or not. My hunch says it would have been fine even if I didn't include the other certs.

I got my FL non-res a few years ago and all I used was a certificate I got from Gander Mountain pistol safety course that I went to just as emotional support for a female friend of mine applying for her NY CCW. They accepted it no prob.

Unfortunately I've got lots of family in FL, so getting the non-res would be very useful for me.

I'm wondering, if I submit the certificate 'as is' without the signature on the live fire, will the FL Dept of Agriculture deny the application or possibly suspend the application and request a live fire cert to complete the process?

FYI, I've had NY unrestricted for almost 30 yrs.
I also have PA non-res

I submitted a copy of my CCW permit, had my fingerprinting done at a local NYS Trooper barracks, and submitted a copy of my NRA Basic Pistol Safety course certificate (along with whatever else was required). Received my FL CCW permit in the mail about 4 weeks later, zero issues.

Did your NRA Basic include a signature on the live fire line?

FYI, I just checked my NRA Basic pistol cert and it only has one place to sign and doesn't indicate anywhere on certificate that it included live fire (even though the course did). From what I understand it's a standard form for these NRA courses...

Well If people are getting it with a basic nys pistol permit class (mine did not include live fire) and some have just submitted a hunters safety course certificate and the law states, in Florida, that that is an acceptable means of "training" I do not see why an NRA course without live fire would be a negative if the others are accepted. I am going to try...see if I succeed.

NYS is one of the most stringent states to get a CCW so If you get one for new york the rest of the country (good states atleast) should be a walk in the park...logically speaking.
