Fellow Crossbow Hunter/Sporting Goods Retailer,

Effective for the 2014-15 New York hunting season, crossbows can now be used during portions of bowhunting season.

Below is text from the New York Crossbow Hunting Regulations that specify when a crossbow can be used during the respective seasons to hunt deer, bear or turkey. You can read the entire New York Crossbow Hunting Regulations by clicking here:

Crossbows may also be used to take deer or bear during limited portions of bowhunting seasons as follows, provided that the hunter possesses the muzzleloading privilege:

  • During the last 14 days of the early bowhunting season in the Southern Zone (i.e., November 1 - November 14, 2014);

  • During the last 10 days of the early bowhunting season in the Northern Zone (i.e., October 15 - October 24; this includes the 7-day early muzzleloader season in the Northern Zone);

  • Only Bow/Muzz tags, DMPs or DMAPs may be use during these times.
Crossbows may be used to take the following small game species during their respective open seasons:

  • Wild Turkey.
  • Any other small game or upland game birds.
  • Unprotected wildlife (e.g. red squirrels and woodchucks) at anytime.

Regards,

Parker Bows

So If I have a DMP for Shotgun? Or do I have to get the Bow certification.

DMPs are good for bow season. You've been able to use them in bow season for a few years now. However, I think you have to have an unfilled bow season tag to hunt during bow season. The requirements are a little odd.

I'm not sure how the crossbow season will work though. Will you have to take the bowhunters education course to use them now?

Yes I did. I may sell my 9 month old Parker Frontier (bought as a NOS leftover) which is 60-70lb and 29" draw length. May is the keyword. It's getting new string and cables as I type this. ;) If I sell it will be an inexpensive upgrade ... think $225 setup with rest installed, new teflon cable guide, new cables and string, peep sight and D loop. All one will have to do is add sights and a quiver and you're ready for the woods. ;) For those looking for a crossbow, please PM stringman whom is a new vendor on here. I was at his shop today and he has Barnett crossbows as well as Parker ,,,, he even has the Barnett Ghost 410 in stock!! 410fps!! :eek:oh: His computer went down so I'll be helping him list some items and specials and such over the next few days using one of my laptops so he'll be able to access his PM's and such. He was absolutely slammed at the shop today!! One Ghost went out the door while I was there. (yes ... that was a shameless plug!!)

I won't be happy until crossbows are permitted for ALL of archery season. A bow is a bow is a bow.
of which a crossbow is not. LOL It has a fixed stock and a fixed trigger and you must shoulder it. It was deemed a firearm by NYS years ago and it still meets that criteria. You're also not holding the string yourself which removes it from bow status. I'm not sure it actually left the firearm designation, but it most certainly is not considered a bow by any stretch of the term. I honestly don't care if it's allowed during archery season, which it appears to be seeing as how you can use it Oct 15th. I'm waiting for all of the injuries to be reported from misfires and people falling out of treestands when they try to cock it (again not a bow term) on that little platform. Please guys and gals .... use a F.A.S. at all times in a stand with these things. (Fall Arrest System) It'll be the best money you'll ever spend should it actually need to be used. I'm also looking into whether or not you'll all have to take an archery course to hunt in bow season. This is very cool YET very confusing at the same time. Maybe now I can get someone to go hunting with me and they can take the deer. ;) I use my tag, but I don't eat the venison so i give it to someone who will or I give it to the Venison Donation Program through DEC which gets meat to those less fortunate.

I bought a crossbow about 14 years ago. Maybe it is time to upgrade to one of those new forward leaf types.

Required Crossbow Hunting Qualification & Safety Training There are 3 options to choose from in order to complete the required crossbow qualification & safety training. All must accompany a NYS hunting license and in some cases a muzzleloading privilege:

Big Game License requirement:

  • The new law essentially treats crossbows as a muzzleloader. Hunters must possess a muzzleloader hunting privilege to legally hunt with a crossbow during any muzzleloader season OR during open portions of the early bowhunting seasons. Muzzleloader privilege is not required when hunting with a crossbow during the early bear season or the regular firearms seasons.
  • Bowhunting privilege is not required for use of a crossbow at any time.
