Probably a case of either he's trying to catch them in their "natural habitat" as human beings, or he's actually anti-gun.
There was another book which centered around pictures of gun-owners in their homes, and sometimes they weren't all great pictures. One comes to mind of a guy in his living room with a stack of pizza boxes in the corner and a table full of guns, and not much of anything else. The author wanted to show that gun owners are ordinary people, just like everyone else, not a bunch of truck-driving, venison-eating, log-cabin, Nugent-like nutjobs. More than likely, this book is just playing off of the success of that one, regardless of its intent.
