as many of you know, Chris is my cousin and he is a strong believer/supporter of the Constitution. im posting this in this forum because he is directly pushing legislation that will protect more of our freedoms and restrict government spying on citizens. i wasnt sure if i should post this in this forum or off topic, but since its about politics (although not gun politics) i figured it was best suited here. i just got this email from him which i thought was excellent because he even quotes Ben Franklin in it which was a line in my signature at one point.

Freedom

"Dear Friend,

As you know, I have been a strong critic of the National Security Agency (NSA) data collection program. This includes supporting an amendment in July that would have defunded the NSA program responsible for the collection of data on Americans. I also have voted against the reauthorizations of parts of the PATRIOT Act and Foreign Surveillance Act (FISA) since I have been in Congress because of longstanding concerns about their unconstitutional authority.

This week, we took an important step forward in the effort to reform the NSA, introducing a new piece of legislation, H.R. 3361, the USA FREEDOM Act. This bill reins in the dragnet collection of data by the National Security Agency (NSA) and other government agencies, ending bulk collection of data under Section 215 of the Patriot Act.

In addition to ending the phone record collection, the USA Freedom Act would include the following provisions:

  • Strengthen prohibitions against targeting the communications of Americans and would require the government to more aggressively delete information accidentally collected on Americans
  • Increases the transparency of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) and creates the Office of the Special Advocate tasked with arguing for stronger privacy protections before the FISA Court and is vested with the authority to appeal decisions.
  • Expand the power of the existing Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board to include subpoena power to investigate issues related to privacy and national security.
  • Allow internet and telecom companies like Google, Microsoft and Facebook to publically reveal more statistics about the information they turn over to the government.
  • Require the government to make semi-annual public reports estimating the number of individuals that were subject to FISA orders authorizing electronic surveillance.

As Ben Franklin once said, someone who gives up his liberty for security deserves neither, and I refuse to accept the false choice that we have to give up our civil liberties and the rights that define us as Americans to remain safe. I will be strongly advocating for swift passage of this legislation and am pleased to report the bill is already up to 78 bipartisan cosponsors and has been introduced in the Senate.

I'm returning to New York this evening, and have a busy schedule planed over the next 12 days that I will be home. I'll keep you posted on events but, most immediately, I'll be meeting with constituents in the Kingston office tomorrow and Friday. Over the weekend, I'll be attending the Greene County Purple Heart Designation Ceremony in Catskill, the 8th Annual Dutchess County Veterans Appreciation Day, and the Culinary Command Training Graduation Dinner in Ghent on Saturday. On Sunday, I'll be in Sullivan County at the First Annual Hall of Distinction Induction Ceremony in Monticello and the Woman of the Year Dinner in Bloomingburg. On Monday, I'll be joining students at Marlboro Middle School for their "Take a Veteran to School" event.

Hope to see you, and have a Happy and Safe Halloween tomorrow.

Sincerely,
Chris Gibson
Member of Congress"

for anyone who lives in the district that Chris represents i also urge you to support his campaign as he has an opponent that went district shopping (i believe he is the "husband" of the founder of facebook) and is looking to fundamentally change the region into an obamatopia.

here is his home page

Thank you to your cousin celt. Sadly, it seems that he shouldn't have to do this, but the way things are I guess our government is comprised of 'a few good men'.

I think he should push legislation to disband the NSA.
