They are not. Well, actual NAMED "AR-15"s are, but the others are not.

So why are they illegal and part of our socialist AWB?

Because they were the original "assault rifle" when the ban was enacted so they named it specifically. This topic has come up semi frequently around here since it also says "or copies of".
My colt is stamped "M-4" which is legal to own, but like stated above if it was stamped "AR-15" then it would be illegal.
