I am turning 21 soon and would like a permit. I would prefer unrestricted but if they restrict it that is fine. I am currently a college student without any mental health issues or even so much as a traffic ticket. As for references I can put a local police LT, a few federal corrections officers who I do combatives with out in PA who have seen me handle firearms in a safe manner. I also can probably put a judge down as a reference.

As for reasons I am assuming personal defense doesn't cut it in NY, so I can put my job is a cash money job and I sometimes have to go to areas like New Burgh which is the most crime ridden city in NY and is ranked nationally.

Thanks

Welcome Red,

I can't tell you much about the process because I just started the process. The only thing I know for sure is the 4 references you choose have to live in orange county, can not be related to you, can not live in the same house as you, and can not be related to each other. (i'm making an ASSumption that includes spouses but I didn't ask)

Now, I DO NOT KNOW THIS FOR SURE but I was told, If you recently moved to OC and don't know 4 people, you can ask the Sheriff's office about what to do.

sorry I couldn't be of more help.

like daisy said the references must live in orange county. people always seem to think the more "powerful" or someone in law enforcment will help them get a permit faster and get the unrestricted they want. the only way i see it helping you is if they actually contact the reference or even better if they placed a call to someone else they know to put in a good word. you might also be able to have them provide a letter but that might not even help. i dont feel the references make a big difference. but when i turned 21 in december 2011 my main focus was on my permit and i had everything done by the end of that month, just like you i have no mental heath problems; no traffic tickets or anything; and i am also a student. Judge DeRosa issued me an unrestricted permit. if you are lucky you will get him because i have heard from several people that is the main permit he gives out.

also for reasons for an unrestricted i put all the commons like fishing, hiking, hunting, target, ect. but i was also told to put on the actually application personal protection otherwise it would be restricted to the ones i listed. in my letter to the judge i explain i carry a large sum of cash and even blank checks at time for a family business in which i am responsible for at times over 10k worth of checks and cash. i was also told by the sheriffs to put possible future employment in armed security field.

i hope some of this information helps you out. good luck

I went through the process in Rockland but have been living in Orange for past 5 years and applied to have restrictions removed in Orange. I agree with what was said above. Definitely include personal protection along with other reasons. Also add how you're going to store your guns (hint, get a safe if you don't have one) and how you are a responsible person, etc. Read up on or take a class on Use of Force and demonstrate your understanding and competency of the law in your app. References matter but they don't have to all be LE, etc. Get people who you are sure will stand up for you. Assuming no problems in your background you shouldn't have any problems. Worse case the place restrictions on it and you apply to have them removed in a year or so. Good luck, and stay safe.

I wouldn't think it would hurt but might not have much weight if nothing has happened to move that forward yet. I wouldn't dwell on it as you don't need a NY permit to be in the military, but could provide a little color about the type of person you are. I don't have a military background so maybe others can chime in. Good luck.

Your judge is the one who sets the restrictions. I think it would be helpful to find someone who has dealt with that judge and find out what their policies are. I have Woods, and her policy is to give it out with restrictions. If there is no trouble after 18 months you can apply to have them removed. My brother has another judge (I forgot who) that makes you wait a couple of years before he will issue an unrestricted.
