I do not understand about the people who are going to give the NRA extra money that are going to vote for Romney so what good is it giving money to the NRA if you are going to vote for Mitt Romney? NRA cannot vote and your vote is what it going to put that person in the White House. Also did any of know that the National Rifle Association was started here in New York state? Ironic isn't it?

Did that email say what 11 states they were targeting? Also, how do they get lists of gun owners? Is that public record? They started sending me stuff after I started buying guns.

I ask again: What has the NRA done for gun rights in NY?
A lot. Sometimes it's the bad laws you don't have that you appreciate the least. I think we can all imagine how much worse things could be. Last I knew, we still don't have a microstamping law. Why is that?

ALBANY - The National Rifle Association has taken aim at New York, doling out more campaign donations in the Empire State over the last nine years than in any other in state in the nation.
The prime target: defeating Mayor Bloomberg's push for microstamping of bullet casings, which backers say would be an effective crimefighting tool.
Since 2003, the NRA has reported giving New York legislators and political committees $217,400 - the organization's largest outlay over that period.

I, too am a life member, and even though we dont see it in this state, the NRA has done a wealth of good for gun owners. Round-up and my life membership is likely all they'll get outta me, because I don't have much cash. If I did, I probably still wouldn't give them much of it, but when stuff like this comes up, I would gladly give a little extra.

I don't think microstamping would have passed even without the NRA. Is that 217K since 2003? Please tell me it's $217 million

""The purpose of this bill is honorable. However, the technology and execution of microstamping is fundamentally flawed. This measure presumes a crime will be committed with legally-obtained and New York State-manufactured and sold firearms. The means criminals have at their disposal to circumvent microstamping vastly outweigh any belief that microstamping will succeed where the New York Combined Ballistic Identification System (CoBIS), which also catalogued spent shell casings to the specific firearm, absolutely failed," said Burling

"Twelve years of unsuccessful attempts to connect shell casings found at a crime scene to a specific firearm under CoBIS have drained resources, funding and staff power from the state and local law enforcement agencies. Microstamping would only continue this failed system. In fact, microstamping would not account for shells fired from revolvers, significantly increase manufacturing costs for our New York State firearm manufacturers like Remington Arms and Kimber, and effectively ban any out-of-state or international firearms from being purchased by law-abiding citizens for recreation or personal defense," said Burling.

"Remington Arms has said it will leave this state if it is forced to make the significant and costly changes to its assembly lines necessary to incorporate microstamping. This bill doesn't fight crime; it effectively takes firearms out of the homes of law-abiding citizens and destroys a viable New York State industry," said Burling."

No elected official wants to be responsible for losing jobs due to a law that would not ever work.

What about pre-emptive measures? What exactly did they say to stop the AWB from not-sunsetting here? What did they do to prevent CoBIS? What did they do as the pistol permit process grew into the hideous monster it is today? Oh, I know what they did, they had not even a single office in NY fighting for our issues but still asked for money.
Just remember, the NRA did say they were against COBIS in NY and elsewhere. They were at least aware of NY State COBIS.

Let's not look at the money someone like Babs makes. All the actors and actresses that make MILLIONS that have NO education yet are stumping for O.B. Do you know Taylor Swift makes $52 Million dollars a year, that's $1 Million dollars a WEEK, but we worried about the exec that is making $900.000 a year who is protecting our gun rights, nice soapbox! Maybe we should all look at the issues in this election. O.B. said he wants ALL assualt weapons. Does anyone know what O.B's diffenition of "assualt wepons" are? Not my opinion O.B's fact along with the Brady bunch, all semi auto pistols and shotguns, thats what they say is an "ASSUALT WEOPON!!!

Let's not forget the scum like AROD, Ray Lewis and the like that tell us that the Rebups only care about the rich yet make millions and are supporting O. B. REALLLY!

So yes let's worry tat LaPierre makes $900.000 cause that's the REAL ISSUE HERE!
I agree. LaPierre is worth every penny in my book. The knick-knacks, however, should go...

If you shoot, hunt, own & use guns, you have a considerable amount of money invested in your hobby / pastime. You should consider supporting the organizations that do SOME work to protect those rights. A lot of people don't like the NRA -- our club, Camden Rod & Gun Club, Camden NY, has personally benefitted greatly from the NRA over the years. On three different occassions that I can recall we have received grants from the NRA for range improvements, safety improvements, and youth education that have totaled in the area of $ 10,000.00 for 3 grants. Could your club benefit from this kind of money to improve things around the place? I should think so. I am an NRA life member, I support other organizations also with monetary donations as I can. I don't necessarily do it for me. -- I do it for my grand children & great grand children & yours, and the generations yet to come -- you should support whoever you choose, and be politically active at the same time. If you stand by and do NOTHING - eventually, when the ANTI'S win -- you will have NOTHING to do, (shooting-wise anyway).

A lot of opinions have been expressed here, many I agree with many I do not. But I would like for the intent of my OP to not get lost through the course of this thread.
Although it may appear that I was advocating that people donate to the NRA the bigger issue is that people need to donate to something. tyhis was driven home once again when I collected my mail today. in today's mail I have 8 different flyers advocating for the overthrow of our State Congresswoman Nan Hayworth who is up for re-election. In the past 6 weeks I have received no less than 4-5 flyers a day sent out by the dems or a friend of the dems. Republicans and Tea Partiers alike are under a major media blitzkrieg. In the same time frame I have received almost no information in support of those candidates.
My mind is made up, and I am steadfast in my decisions, but what of others that are easily swayed? Could not this onslaught have significant impact on those that may not know the issues very well or are undecided? How many people receiving this mail everyday are going to go to the poles with all that information planted in their minds?
It's for this reason that I am breaking with my own personal traditions and am donating money to the causes and candidates that I support. At least on Nov 6th if I do not win it will not be because I sat idly by complaining about how much money some exec makes or what orginazation did not do enough in my home town.
Let me finish by saying that no matter if the NRA has not done enough in NY, I travel to, Hunt and Carry in many other States, and I know the NRA has had some part in allowing me to have those freedoms!

what i like is anyone that uses Wikipedia as a resource without backing it up using an actual resource....
ANYONE can modify wikipedia.
And that's the genius of it - Wikipedia is peer-reviewed, fact-checked, and anyone from the average Joe to an Ivy league scholar can update the content. In most cases Wikipedia content is more accurate and detailed than any hard-copy Encyclopedia has ever been in history. Encyclopedias have a tiny number of authors and content/fact-checkers by comparison. Wikipedia has an entire world to keep it in check.

If you want to try and mess with Wikipedia, go ahead and sabotage a random Wiki article and wait a few days to see if your content ever shows up...it won't. Edits to articles need to be "accepted" and reviewed by peers who have volunteered to keep the content under control. It's not a perfect system but it's an effective one nonetheless. If someone actualy manages to sabotage a Wiki article it is quickly noticed and the content is removed/corrected. On the other hand, if and when you see something factually inaccurate in a Wikipedia article, feel free to correct it yourself, but make sure you can cite some references that can legitmately back up your corrections.

How can you say that Wikipedia cannot be a resource? Search Wiki for something well-known (gun control for example), then scroll down to the bottom of the page. Notice the dozens of cited references and footnotes in the article?

I am aware of the hunger in Africa. When they start sending me $1000 per person for a lifetime membership to my "Stop Hunger Association" then I will do the same stuff the NRA does...and PUBLICLY say I am against the hunger in Africa. Oh my, can't see you starving kids down there over this pile of T-Bone steaks. I'm not sure if I can eat them all. BTW, I need sour cream for my baked potato, so would y'all starving kids send me just another $100 a month and they I will REALLY be aware you guys exist.
