So, I found a guy looking to buy a set of tires for his truck . . needed some cash . . . I bought his AR15A2 and called Colt, they told me that they cant say with absolute certainty that it is preban because they only keep paperwork on "some" of their firearms. BUT was told that it was likley sold during 92-93 and it was sold complete. the serial number that they had on file was only about 1000 before this.
I will post pics if needed but it is stamped ar15A2 Gov't Model. Ser GS0073XX..
my question is what model is this? is it R6550?
Its not a carbine . .
I wanted to find some info on it to see how well I made out and if it is complete.
What should I look for..

i had a colt govt carbine i bought in 93. the ser # on mine started with GC. if you want i can pm the ser # to see if yours is earlier than mine. i only paid $850 for it new in box, the good old days.

from another forum... "First, there are 5 versions of the R6550. The first version is a AR15-A2 Sporter II with 800m sights. This version is fairly scarce as compared to most of the other versions. The second version is the AR15-A2 Government Model with a bayo lug. (most common) The third version is the AR15-A2 Government Model with out a bayo lug. From your description, it would appear that you may have a R6550K.

Depends what you paid for it. I will give you 75 bucks more then you paid, not a bad profit right?

I think, Pre Ban Lowers go for 600 to 1000, just the lower. Stripped. I could be way off but I *think* I am at least in the ballpark. Someone else with more knowledge will chime in shortly.

you can always check gunbroker for sold auctions. i think that's the most up to date and accurate.

I paid a G for it.. It looks like it has very little use.. mag well doesnt have any real wear on it at all..

I made an error.. I originally posted the correct serial number but in response to Plater1 I posted it as GC, it is GS. . . so I guess the numbers between the two mean little considering that GC is Gov Carbine? and GS is . . . .something else?

I cannot find it on the serial number list but I have yet to see a post ban slab sided lower from Colt. No Bayo Lug would make it a Blue Label while Bayo lug should make it a green label. I would call Colt again as ATF requires all manufacturers to record serial number since 1968. Colt has the info. Their logs will have to show where it shipped to and when it left the factory. I bet if you offer to pay for their "Factory Letter" which starts at $100 I believe they will come up with it. That lower is $600-900 but probably closer to $750 though with the factory conversion kit it may be worth more as a complete rifle.
I can look tomorrow when I have my Blue Book and see if I can figure out exactly what you have. Hope this helps a bit but probably just confused you more.

That is definitely a preban - you can easily tell because the lack of the cage on the mag well, that is an older style Colt lower receiver and by the time of the original AWB they moved on to the modern style receiver.

In that condition I have seen one just like it at a local shop going for $1,600.

I will make one suggestion, as it is a Colt it has value in an out of NY so don't make any changes that you can't undo unless you absolutely have no intentions of ever selling it.

Thanks guys!, yeah - I dont plan on making any mods to it, it'll just sit in the safe for another 20 yrs.. Norm_ I actually had that exact list of numbers on my iphone when I went to get it but was real worried because of the lack of GS serial numbers on the list.. I had made note of the slab-side and the large pin as well, figured that it had to be preban. . .I didnt know that EVERY firearm had to have exact papers, I figured (because of what the guy at colt told me) that they kept papers on batches for complete rifles and seperate for shipped lowers.

Any info that I can get on it is always good, makes me a better AR owner -
