My Son Graduated from Potsdam in May of 2012. I live in Orange County Newy York and made the long trip many times, and I always carried. The first two years he lived on Campus, and the Potsdam Police had no issues with storing my pistol. The last two years he lived in off campus housing and I just left it in his room locked.
The Potsdam Police is about 1/2 mile from campus.

I went to Clarkson as well. They stopped doing that a few years ago... When I was a freshmen, they would store guns for us. Me and a couple buddies would go skeet shooting all the time. The next year they changed the policy and wouldn't store them anymore. OP, glad to hear the Potsdam PD route worked out for you.
I went to Clarkson and stored my hunting rifle with the campus security folks. Not sure about handguns though. Wasn't an issue back then.

you've stated you don't intend on carrying while on campus (i agree), and unless you're clive owen (or any other action film star, though he came to mind first) i doubt you'll be involved in a shoot-out during your four hour ride. i'd say this is a pretty self-explanatory scenario!

I am a college student at SUNY Buffalo. I live on campus and I am a firearm owner. There is a way to bring firearms on campus (for storage), but it will take some time before you are able to do so. First you want to contact the chief of police for that university. I sent an email and they said sure, what guns you want to bring. I said a sig556 and a Remington 597. They were hesitant on doing it but realized I was doing the right thing (contacting them before I did it). I am also a NRA RSO and I am applying for a pistol permit to validate it that NRA Certificate. I purchased a M&P Shield and asked them if I could store it there. they said yes I could.

You have to also realize, they can say no. and if they say yes, they might want to meet you before they allow you are allowed to store it there. I have been very lucky, I have gotten to know my campus police and they have gotten to know me. I have also been given permission to start a target shooting club for the college, and the members would be able to store firearms at the police station as well.

Steps
1: call the police station, and ask about safe storing of a firearm at their office when you drop off your daughter.
2: the chief is going to have the final say, so if the phone operator does not know what to do, ask to speak with the chief or their firearm instructor.
3: explain that you want to store an "unloaded firearm" at their station while you are visiting. they will likely take a month or so to decide. (There is a document somewhere online that states that you can store firearms at the office if you go to school there. not sure if it pertains to parents.) you will have to set up a drop-off time and pickup time if they approve of you to use their office as a "safe storage" place. my time frame is 7:30 am -2:30pm weekdays only.

I am not sure if that helps you? but I hope it gives you the right direction to pursue

you are a lucky man. i wish i could do that on my campus. i go to SUNYIT and there is no way the cheif would let this happen. a couple years ago they let students store their firearms with the campus police (state police) but once we got a new chief things changed.

i live 3 hours away from my college but i had a buddy buy me 1000 rounds of ammo for a really good deal, i was heading home 4 days after i got it and asked the campus police to store it until i could bring it home. there is no where in the law that i have seen that says its illegal to have ammo on a campus, only the firearm, but i tried to do the right thing by having them hold it. the Chief would not even allow my ammo to be held there for 4 days until i could bring it home. he was not very happy about me even trying to do this.
