I ran across on a police website..... it was produced shortly before the Colorado incident and released recently.

My planning/training etc. is all geared around responding to the incident, but this video offers some good points to better prepare yourself so that you improve your chances of getting out alive.

If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

Swift moving text message scaring residents away from the mall | NBC-WKTV News Channel 2 - Utica News, Weather, Sports - | Crime Reports

NEW HARTFORD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A startling message is circulating via text message as well as on social media sites, telling people to stay away from Sangertown Square Mall in New Hartford.
NEWSChannel 2 has received several calls into the newsroom in regards to the message, which says " Do not go near Sangertown Mall there r issues cops r on special assignments there...think of Colorado incident."

New Hartford Police say there may be increased security in the area surrounding the mall on Thursday in response to the text message.

On Wednesday afternoon the New Hartford Police Department was contacted by Sangertown Mall authorities in regards to a posting that was brought to their attention on an on-line blog. The blog was discussing the Colorado shooting when a participant of the blog posted "Next attack will be in NY at Sangertown Mall".

The New Hartford Police Department says that it is currently working with Yahoo, the site of the blog, in an attempt to identify the person responsible for posting the comment.

Police said that on Thursday morning a message was sent on Twitter stating "In case you don't know already, DON'T GO TO SANGERTOWN MALL TODAY!" Police say it is unknown if the threats are connected at this time.

Police Chief Michael Inserra says that these threats are being taken seriously and are being actively investigated. Uniform patrols have been increased and Officers have been placed in Sangertown Mall.

Outside agencies including the FBI have been advised of the investigation.

Threats of this nature are in violation of the New York State Penal Law and considered to be a terroristic threat, a class D Felony.

Sangertown Square Mall officials so far have no comment on the issue.
I work at a kiosk in the busiest wing of the mall. It's been a stressful week. When the news first broke people were going crazy, some stores closed their gates and left the mall. The mall management didn't let anyone know any details about anything and then when news crews arrived they went around telling people that there was no threat.

If all else fails and you are forced to fight having a weapon legally carried on you eliminates your need to improvise weapons. You would think being that the video was funded by the department of homeland security the government wouldn't be so damn anti gun. That video would be 3.5 seconds long if some guy at the front desk just blew the shooters brains out after the first shot.

I saw that on arfcom yesterday. It all probably seems like common sense to us, but it is amazing they need to actually teach folks to run away.

If that ever happened, even while carrying my goal would be, flee, with my family between myself and the shooter, find a safe spot as far away from the action as we can get, then un-holster, and wait for help.

I wouldn't unholster unless I saw or heard the guy getting close, the police are getting a call about a crazy guy with a gun shooting at people, probably mixed and confused details, it would be bad for a cruiser to drive by you (if you ran to the street), or for the rescue team to stumble upon you with a weapon out, they might mistake you for the shooter and shoot first.

I saw that video on Alex Jones the other day. My first thought was "Really?! NOBODY has a CCW???!!" Then I saw the sign on the door that the 'bad guy' entered that said "All firearms Prohibited" and realized that was why that guy picked that place.
