Default Utah Permit Training

My wife and I attended the Utah permit course today at Bass Pro in Auburn given by Rochester Personal Defense.

Great course! It covered a lot more then I figured it would. The instructor, Ian Scott, was entertaining to listen to and obviously very knowledgeable. The support staff was fantastic, everything was organized well and we even got a discount at the pizza shop in the food court!

I'm glad you had a good time! I've been helping Ian and Dave with the Utah classes for a little while now, and I still have a good time in his classes.

Is this an intro class on getting a Utah permit, or is it the full course?

My friend in SLC just became a Utah resident and signed up for the course a few hours after.

Tim, that's because you didn't take it there.....LOL

As far as I know, there is no 'Intro' class for the Utah permit. You do the full class and you're GTG

Yeah I misread a webpage and thought the course was longer than one day at some other places, thats the only reason I asked if it was an intro to getting the permit.

I'll have to tell my father about this, I think he'd definitely be interested.

Dennisgiii:

Go to Rochester Personal Defense - SafeInRochester.com, Self Defense Classes, Firearms Training in Rochester New York and look up the Utah class. All of the info about the permit and the upcoming dates are right there.

Dave

Utah's a whole another world. I was able to carry virtually everywhere out there. Only place I couldn't was the LDS temple where my cousin got married. Went to a few state parks, visited a bunch of museums and other locations. Not once did I see a "no guns" sign or have to worry about whether or not it was legal to carry where I was. Isn't statewide preemption and uniformity a wonderful concept?

I actually carried there before I did in NYS. Didn't have my unrestricted NYS license yet and I figured it was a good chance to practice with my gear and get comfortable with it. Better to screw up and break concealment (not that I did) in a place where the reaction is likely to be "That's a nice looking gun you've got there" as opposed to the "OMG HE'S GOT A GUN, CALL THE COPS!!!" reaction you'd likely receive in these parts.

I had a blast out there and would like to visit again someday.

Yeah its a pretty cool state, they have concealed carry on campus out there too (at the state schools). I was real close to moving out there for graduate school at the University of Utah. I guess I'll just have to settle with visiting my friends that are out there a few times a year.

They let you carry in elementary schools while picking up your kids. Heck, I recall reading somewhere that their response to mass school shootings was to pass a law saying teachers and janitors with CCLs could carry to work.

It's not just guns either. They have a lot of common sense in other areas as well. Someone I know decided to move out there because she was fleeing an abusive relationship and found out that Utah is one of the few states that puts real teeth into orders of protection. New York State says that her abusive ex has the right to visit the child that he beat the snot out of. Utah says she has the right to kill him if he comes after them again.

They also have the lowest unemployment rate in the United States right now. It was a lot different driving around and seeing construction as opposed to abandoned lots and empty storefronts.

Not sure I'd move out there -- the dry air really did a number on me -- but I can think of worse places to live.
