I have to take a knife or other unarmed class one of these days. I learned a lot from your folding knife article. I mostly learned that my knife isn't a very good defensive knife

Well, here's your chance bro. Any knife is better than no knife.

Anyone else a little stiff this morning? ;D It was nice training with all of you guys last night and hopefully we will get the chance to do so again in the near future. For those guys who were unable to make it to the Tactical Folding Knife class, this will be a quick after action.

As with all MDTS events I have attended, we started out with a safety briefing, discussion about what was expected from the training partner, as well as knowing the limitations of yourself and your partner. Chris was able to bring an incredible assortment of edge weapons, both folding and fixed blade, as well as training blades for demonstration purposes. It seemed that each knife had both positive and not so positive (sometimes negative) aspects that played a key role in their deployment under duress. Before going into design discussion, we discussed what our combative goal(MaxF) was in the use of a Tactical Folding Knife (TFK) and what strikes will allow you to achieve that goal. The type of knife you carry should be conducive to achieving the established goal(MaxF) in a deadly force encounter, which brought us to an in depth presentation on the defensive equipment.

•Lock types- strengths/weaknesses and the physical forces applied to the knife
•Importance of the size of the tool in your hand
•Different blade opening options-thumb stud, etc.
    •Tip-up or tip-down carry?
•Which blade edge types offer superior results and why.
    •Carry location and access.

Through very close contact range, it quickly became clear that physical contact/defense was necessary well before any access to the TFK was possible. This was not good for guys like me, with no training in unarmed combatives. Luckily, we covered defensive responses to surprise attacks commonly found when a lack of situational awareness is present, a “sucker punch” is thrown, or the ability to maintain distance is lost. At that point in time we were able to pair off with another person to practice drills on default defense, TFK access and point driven thrust methods which allowed striking from any grip established on the TFK. Towards the end of the TFK workshop, we discussed the methods for escaping a hold by the aggressor, whether it was your body or the knife in your hand.

The information available in this 4 hour TFK workshop easily could have been spread out over a 12+ hour/ multiple block training routine. The importance was placed on basics, as it should. The ability to initially survive a violent offense was stressed and then came the goal of accessing your TFK, which I feel most guys found to be very unlikely. The capabilities of a fixed blade became very apparent to everyone that attended. I found that trying to access a folding knife buried in my pocket, or even clipped to my pocket, in a clinch with sweaty hands was incredibly difficult to do. And we weren’t even striking or grounding each other, merely shoving back and forth in a standing clinch. This workshop was a fantastic learning opportunity that offered the chance to see the strengths and weakness of both your chosen edged defensive tool and yourself. A big thanks to Chris Fry for putting this on, to Pat S. and Matt for helping out, and to all the guys who came out, making that friendly learning environment possible.
