    Default Tourist-friendly ranges in NYC

    Evening,

I'm hopefully visiting NYC soon and am looking for ranges in or around that area where you can rent weapons and have a good experience, preferably less than $200.

    I (will be) 20.
I hail from the UK. Obviously no US permits or licences.
Closer to Manhattan the better, though a little travelling might be cool. Obviously not by car.
Have already 'done' .22LR, 9mm, .223 and 5.56 so am looking to expand my horizons. Particularly interested in 40SW, 45ACP, 12GA, 7.62x39, .308, more outlandish prospects might include 357SIG, 44mag, 50AE and 50BMG.

Any help would be appreciated. I see over 200 ranges listed for NYS at various places so obviously some expert opinion from you fine chaps wouldn't go amiss.

    Thanks,

    Dave

In NY state it is illegal to possess a firearm if you are not a United States Citizen.

Here is the section from the law...

§ 265.01 Criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree.
A person is guilty of criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth
    degree when:
    ...
    (5) He possesses any dangerous or deadly weapon and is not a citizen
    of the United States;

That applies to renting firearms (for use only under supervision and on the range in question)?

I had no problems doing this in New Mexico... NYC is strict indeed.

NYC is at least as strict as the UK. Probably more so.

That's a state law, not just NY city. I'm not a lawyer but I would think you renting a gun at a range would make you "in possession" of it.

You can't even pick up a firearm let alone a pistol... you're pretty much out of luck.

Yup, exactly. If you really wanted to be a prick, you can lock up/summons owner, take licence.

In NYC you may shoot at West Side Pistol Range www.westsidepistolrange.com without a license however you are restricted to .22 rifles. To hold a handgun under any circumstances in NYC you need a NYC handgun license. The state license is not accepted or valid inside NYC and if you show up at a NYC range with one they will tell you to leave or arrest you if you are in possession of a firearm. Additionally, you need to be at least 21, even to shoot the .22 rifles that they rent. Sorry, you're out of luck.
