Default The GOOD gun handling report thread

So....we always tend to focus on the negative but never the positive. We love to bash a store or situation where we experienced or witnessed bad gun handling.

    How about a new concept?????

Let's start listing instances where we have seen GOOD gun handling. Even if it's a place where you may have seen sub-optimal handling skills.

    To refresh everyone's thoughts:

    1. Never point the gun at anything you would not be willing to shoot
    2. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot
    3. keep the gun unloaded until you are using it (Carrying, storing for protective uses, etc)

You should only have ONE set of gun safety rules. A lot of people have a set for loaded, and another set for unloaded guns. This is not a good way to operate. There will come the day when you will switch up the criteria and make a horrible, irreversable mistake.

Now. Go forth and watch. When you see good handling, come back and let us know?

@ the Gander on Jefferson RD.

The guys working the shelfs and behind the counter always have good practicies whenever I have seen them handling firearms. The guys behind the counter always ensure chamber is clear before handing it over, atleast when I have been there.

I have to give props to my cousin down in PA. Went on a hunting trip with them, he was using his Glock 20. Shot an animal and it took off. He goes to chase after it and hits what he thought was snow but turned out to be ice. Goes down hard but gets right back up and resumes the chase.

He had his gun pointed in a safe direction the entire time and trigger finger properly indexed along the frame. If his finger had been in the trigger guard I'm sure it would have been an ND when he went down.

That is refreshing. In the past, they have pointed handgun at me, locked the slides open or taken the triggerlocks off while pointing the muzzles into their abdomens, pressed the muzzles into their hands, etc.

Glad to see the hard work is paying off

I took a new shooter out this morning. My buddy just got his scope back from being repaired at the factory so we went to site it in at the club I belong to.

His girlfriend had never shot a gun before and came along. I brought the black gun since I thought his .30-06 might be a bit much for a new shooter (that happens to be a girl who probably weighs 120 lbs at most).

Anyway...we gave her the regular safety lecture and handed her the gun and an full mag and she did great. Ran 2 full mags through it and was very aware of where the gun was pointed the whole time. Even pulled her finger off the trigger and indexed it between shots while we looked for her hits through the binocs.

The best part was after she squeezed off the first round she got this little grin on her face and just said in a real quiet voice..."yeah....that's awesome."

So, to keep this thread alive, I'll chime in with another:

At GCL Wednesday, We had two LEO's doing some one on one with what appeared to be a recruit. Looks to me she was having trouble with some of the basics (Grip and rigger press) I watched them for a bit while I was setting up for my lessons and was impressed! Not one instance of bad handling, no carelessness or casual attitude popped out. I was going to pop over and thank them but they were too busy and I did not want to be 'that guy' that noses in on someone without a good reason. On the way out, one of them recognized me and we chatted for a few seconds. Told him "Thanks for doing it correctly and safely" and he said "That's the only way to do it"

    So there you have it...
