Default Need info on a good NEWER rimfire target rifle

I really wanted to get a new Savage MKII. Gunner has stated his shoot any ammo with no problems, but I see more and more people saying they have trouble with SV ammo. The MKII was my first choice and I love the Savages to begin with. The problem is, I don't want to fork over the $400 (or more) for a gun that may or may not shoot the SV or even slower ammo. I'm looking for a gun that will be a good one for the scoped class. (which can go out to 200yds at some events but most are at 50yds) I know when the target is beyond 50yds, I would switch to HV ammo anyways. (just a thing I do) Can anyone recommend a "decent" target rifle that would fit the bill for what I've stated here? Heavy Bull Barrel a must!! I prefer 3/4"-1" barrels but ... not too many are using the 1" anymore. Fluted?? Still haven't figured that part out and neither have those at the comp shoots!! LOL I thought it might be for heat distribution or surface area or even to lighten the barrel and some say it's merely looks. Either way, Fluted barrel not necessary as I'll only wind up weighting the barrel anyways if the gun falls below 12lbs. Good trigger would be nice, but I'll probably go with another Jewel trigger. Should I just stick with the older guns as I have been using? (I do not own one now that will accept a scope and finding the mount for any of them would be tough!) Let me know what you would suggest and if you own the gun you suggest, is there anything you DON'T like about it? Thanks all!!

P.S.- Gunner could be a really nice guy and just GIVE me one of his Savage MKII's that he shoots in his house!! HAHAHAHA

Well I have the MKII and I shoot all kinds of ammo out of mine without issues. You can buy an MKII with a heavy barrel and Accutrigger from Bud's for $193 and add a nice stock to it.

Seems you and Gunner have no problems with the MKII's. How old is yours? I'm starting to think this might just be an issue of maybe a glitch in manufacturing during a certain time frame now.

I got a Ruger 77/22 last fall LGS had it for awhile already had a trigger job, I wanted something to shoot in the Benchrest sporter class this year along with my Winchester 52 that I shoot in the target class. It's a good shooting rifle and has the feel of a full-size rifle it is made with a heavy barrel! I am thinking about changing the barrel Green Mountain makes a fluted barrel that may even shoot better got to think on it alittle more? Couple of friends have CZ's that they like and the Varmite model might work for!!!

I have a Savage MkII also, 2009, accutrigger but not bull barrel. Haven't noticed any problems with different ammo brands. Even shoot Rem Thunderbolts in it (dirty but reasonably accurate). Max range for me is 100 yds, but more confidence at 50 yds, with 3-9x40 scope.

Do you shoot any ammo that is advertised at 1050fps or lower that you've fired out of it?

Yes I saw that. I almost bought two 500rd bricks from a guy a comp shoot. He was selling it for $35 per brick. I just can't justify switching ammo when the Federal 711b stuff is working just fine.

I just checked, and CCI mini-mag lists at 1260 fps MV, Federal ValuePak @ 1260 and 1000fps @ 100 yds., and Rem TB @ 1255.
Maybe I will try some lower fps brands myself.

CZ's are nice rifles and 95% of the reviews that I could find are all very positive. Now if you want to Reeealy get into a precision rimfire rifle check out the Anschutz rifles !!

I have 2 MKII one a newer heavy barreled one and one older standard barrel .... both shoot everything well and the SV and slower ammo extremely well ... every now and then someone is gonna get a bum gun ... it happens ... but for the most part they shoot really well ... also the folks saying that they don't shoot well with the sv ... see at what range they are shooting,if they are shooting off a rest or bags or out a truck window ... could be lots of things .... the savages are inexpensive enough to pick one up to try ... they are pretty cheap if you get one with the plastic stock instead of the wood ... and if its a shooter pick up a stock of your preference from somewhere like Boyds ....

The only Anschutz I would buy is an older one. BUT ... if you REEEEAAAALY want me to have one, you're more than welcome to pick up the tab for me. The last 5 guys I know that bought the newer Anschutz, will not make that $3000 mistake again. They all went back to the older model. It's just not as accurate and to be honest with you, spending $3000 isn't going to gain 3-4 points for me on a bad day.

Favorite .22's 001.jpg This gun has been an Anschutz owners worst nightmare ... a Mossberg 144LSB.

Sorry, you'll have to find another benefactor. I wouldn't drop $3000 on one for myself !!!

I agree about buying an older one though.I've seen one or two out and about at club shoots. They are shooters. You will see one from time to time for sale on rimfire.com too. I've not seen a Mossberg 144LSB up close and personal. I'll have to check one out if I get the opportunity.

I'll add another vote for the CZ 452 or 455. Though since you're looking for a heavy barrel, I would recommend the CZ Varmint. Accuracy on these guns is excellent, and the trigger is easy to work on (look up YoDave Trigger kit). The fit and finish is great too. Definitely a gun that's worth every dollar paid for it.
