Cog lubrication medium INSIDE a metal mag?

long story short, I am doing a mag spring swap on a steel AK47 30-round mag. I got a great Wolff +5% spring from MidwayUSA (cheap too, like $8 or soemthing).

I have just about every gun oil made (what? I like variety. ), but nothing liike a grease and certainly nothing like cosmoline. what do you guys think I should use?

thanks in advance.

I just blast Rem-Oil into all my mags when I feel that they need a good cleaning/lube. Set them on a paper towel for a bit to let the excess drip out. Done. (OK, not all my mags. My PS90 mags get taken apart, but then again they were $75 a pop.)

well, I think "out of the box" so to speak, they are all set and ready to go. but here, I am swapping in a new mag spring. so, I was going to take the opportunity to clean it up and set it back to "all nice" status and stuff.

Hmmmm...I've never lubed a mag in 35 years of owning firearms...must be lucky.

I wipe mine out with oil but then dry it with a dry patch. I don't need my cartridges lubricated

Yeah, I wipe the fouling out and use oil so no rust forms. I just wipe it well and don't leave it wet. Just enough for rust protection.

Went and read up on this stuff, pretty interesting concept. It's odd that in almost 50 years of shooting, I've never seen nor even heard of this stuff. Maybe they should do better marketing? Might have to give it a try if I ever can find it on a shelf. I currently use Militec-1 and find it does everything I could ask for, mostly making cleaning much easier.

Do not put oil on the inside of your mags. It attracts debris which can cause problems. And if the oil gets into your primer you will get a click and no boom... so don't do it. Just wipe them clean.

As Frank said you shouldn't lube the inside of your magazines or the mag spring, it attracts dirt/dust and will end up increasing the wear on the mag parts.

yeah? hmmm, interesting. what you say does make sense. the only reason I asked is when I opened this particular one up, there was come cosmoline-ish stuff in places. the floor plate, on some of the spring ends, etc.

thanks for all the feedback fellas. appreciate it!

Ya I have gotten quite a few mil-surp mags that were packed with cosmoline. I used Hoppes to clean that crap out and left them dry ever since. My G3 mags like to get crudded up with carbon (just the follower it seems), but since they are chromed a simple wipe with a towel is all that they require.

I would just dry wipe to clean mag parts. If you are shooting corrosive ammo then just add some sort of clean/no-residue drying solvent when giving the parts a quick wipe down.

if you want to clean your Magazines, throw them in your tumbler for a couple of hours. I use walnut media.

When I pull them out of the tumbler I wipe the inside down with a "wheel detailer" I got from PepBoys for 3 bucks.

The only thing you should put on the inside of the Magazine is Pure Carnuba wax (if you use anything) wax will not attract dirt, everything else will attract dirt and dust.

BUT, to be honest, if your never going to shoot outside or drop your mags on the ground (like during a competition) then I wouldn't worry about it.
