When you pick up your pistol Permit Application in Monroe County, the paperwork describes a Free Firearms Safety course offered by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. I have called the number given for a it a couple of times in order to get more information, but I not had any luck connecting with anyone there yet. Has anybody here taken that course? I'm wondering where and when they offered it when you took it, and whether you thought it was well done or not..... Thanks, PCos |

Try the one I do. It's not free, but you will get your money's worth. Ask around and others will tell you about it as well...

Thanks Dave, I was looking at your course catalog - which class would be the equivalent? Would it be "NY Permit Legalities and Firearm Safety"? Also - I am very interested in getting some formal training around general pistol and concealed carry - after the basic safety class - what classes would you suggest I look into next? Thanks, PCos |

I went to Dave's lecture and took the Monroe county class. Both are worth it. I think Dave covers more material. The Sheriff's class got into more basic explanations which took longer. Things like defining force and explaining when force is justified. The Sheriff's class was cool because they let you ask a lot of questions about how they (as police officers) deal with certain situations. Dave, for obvious reasons, has to be really careful about "what if" scenarios. I recommend doing both. Sign up for the Monroe county class early, there was a long wait when I signed up for it.

| It IS well worth the money. I got more out of Dave's class than I did the Basic Pistol class I took from a different instructor. I took that class for the certificate - then I took Dave's class for the knowledge.

Thanks for your input guys..... I signed up for the Monroe County Sheriff's course - they are now booking for the May 8th Session. I also just signed up for Dave's course at Rochester Personal Defense (Dave - I'll be at your Feb 22nd session). Sounds like a great start.... but I will have a lot to learn before I am ready for the SECRET SQUIRREL TRAINING..... PCos |

My GF bought herself a bird feeder last year and like a true city girl didn't realize that bird seed on the ground tends to attract other critters. Now we have a focking chipmunk living under our porch and undermining it. She won't let me kill him ("He's cute!") and doesn't grasp the concept that he isn't going anywhere as long as the free food is there. Going to solve that problem this summer though. I've almost got her talked into getting a dog. She wants something small and has convinced herself that a dachshund is the way to go. I'm haven't told her that they were bred to kill badgers and make it their mission in life to exterminate vermin with extreme prejudice. She thinks its cute when the cat brings us a dead mouse so maybe she'll think the same thing when the dachshund murders the chipmunk

I know its off topic but I can't resist sharing my hate for those cute rats with a bushy tail. I thought I squirrel proofed my barn. Well I walked in the other day and had two of the critters running around. The only gun I had was a .357 equipped with Hollow Points. One shot, needless to say it did the job. Usually I use my ruger and ear protection. This time ...well my ears are still ringing. I let his friend go, so he can tell his friends.

You fired a .357 inside a barn without ear protection? No wonder your ears are still ringing. I watched my Grandfather shoot a feral cat once with a .44 magnum. The thing had broken into his rabbit pens and was in the process of killing the rabbits that he was raising. The nearest gun that was available was the .44 so that's what he took outside with him. Needless to say the .44 magnum had enough juice to take down a cat. Think it scared the surviving bunnies half to death though
