Default Concealed Carry Permit Question (Onondaga County)

    Hi,

I'm going in for my appointment to turn in my application soon and was wondering two things. First, if I'm attempting to go for a carry concealed permit and they don't find my reasoning to be 'up to their standards,' will I be outright denied, making me apply again for sportsman? Or will they simply give me a sportsman restriction instead? This is my main concern about applying for a concealed carry permit.

Also, while I'm not asking anyone to post their carry concealed reasons (definitely not going to lie), what are some that have a good chance of getting passed on? Do people tend to list a whole bunch of stuff? Mainly I want it because where I work nights, there are a lot of high school kids without vehicles working there who often need rides home. Since they live in bad areas of town, this makes me quite nervous, but I'm not going to say "no, walk home" and of course give them a ride. Also, it's a very common occurence that I have upwards of $5,000 in computer hardware/accessories/etc with me, almost 24/7 it seems.

Do you all think these would be good enough reasons or should I just try for the Sportsman so I don't risk getting denied and have to start all over? Any and all input is appreciated.

If you are not approved for full carry but pass all the background checks, you will be given a "sportsman" license, so there is no danger in requesting full carry.

I know someone that was approved for full carry for a similar reason that you list--he installs HVAC and often carries large sums of cash.

I am also in Onon, was initially given sportsman, but recently got upgraded to full carry after some training and a carefully crafted statement of proper cause.

Good luck, getting approved for full carry can also depend on which judge your paperwork goes to.

Thanks for the info. If it doesn't hurt I suppose I'll try for the full carry, and see what happens. My only fear was that I would get outright denied, glad to hear that won't happen.

Well I just got back from submitting/fingerprints/photo taking. I tried for a full carry but the officer said it's probably not even worth trying, chances are it won't happen. Worth a try though, I guess we'll see how long the wait will be.

If you don't get it at first, get some training and submit a new statement of proper cause in 6 months. Good luck!

Actually, get some training either way

Yeah I'll definitely be doing some NRA training. Going for my Florida permit once I get the NY one since I travel there about once every 2 weeks. I believe the NRA Basic Pistol Course is a requirement to get it, so that'll be the first course.
