    Default Monroe County Process

Just a little post on the process I went through to obtain my Pistol Permit.

I havent gotten it yet but if all goes well this post might help others.

or at least let me vent a little.

March 5th 2009 - obtained my permit paperwork from a friend who owns a gun shop. He got it from a gun show.
    - I quickly glanced over the attached papers and started filling it out (IN BLACK INK!!! -VERY IMPORTANT)
I got to the part where it asks for a reason. I am not a hunter and I was concerned I would answer incorrectly and end up with a restricted permit.
After reading posts on this forum and getting advice from friends I chose TARGET/RANGE SHOOTING and PERSONAL PROTECTION
Next I found my references all fellow employees. 2 of them had served in the military, 1 I had known for a long time and the 3rd was a part time cop.
I had them each print and sign the 2 permit papers and each sign the proof of character form. Then I filled out Mental Hygine form. I was ready.
Another friend told me I should read the attached paperwork a little better because 2 of my references would keep me from getting my permit.
Ends up 1 of the soldiers was a sworn office and 2nd was obvious, a part time cop. NO SWORN OFFICERS...... dam...
    Tore up permit.

March 10th 2009 - Went down to County Clerks office (Main st rochester) paid another $5 and picked up a new permit app.
    - Did everything the same except picked 2 different references.
    Finished filling out App.

March 11th 2009 - Went to Public Safety Building between 1 and 3pm to get fingerprints done.
    - I was at the wrong building because I did not live in the city of Rochester. I had to go to the Monroe County Sheriff's office in back. (no biggie)
Walked over to Sheriff's office and was told I needed to come back betwen 5-7pm ( again I did not read close enough - the hrs were different.
In case anyone needs to know City of Rochester Residents - Public Saftey Building 1-3pm m-f $30 CASH EVERYONE else Monroe County Sheriff's Building 5-7 M-Th 1-3 Fri $25 CASH (woo hoo! $5 break!!)

    March 13th 2009 - Went to Sheriff's building to get printed. 1:00pm
    - walked in - already 4 people filling out paperwork, all for the same thing.
Went to information desk (do not walk straight into fingerprint area as they will tell you to go to infomation desk - heard them say this many times as I was there to people walking in)
THey took my license and checked my permit paperwork and told me to go over to a small desk and fill out 1 green and 1 blue fingerprint form and come back to the information desk.
DId that, went back, had to sign my name and address to my permit app in front of them and pay my $25. At this point they gave me a reciept and my license back with all the paperwork and told me to go into the fingerprint room.
About 5 people in front of me and 10 behind I waited my turn. Took about 7 min to get all the prints done after which I washed up and was given back all of my papers.

    ... to be continued.

Now all you have to do is come out and be educated on the laws, guidelines and more from a certain instructor that has a class on April 25th at the Gander Mtn store in Henrietta......

Now the long wait. I turned mine in beginning of Sept 2008 and still have not heard a word about my permit. I have also asked my references if they have received a call about my pistol permit. It is currently 7.5 months :-\ no one from the pistol permit office at the county clerk office will return my call about the status

That stinks! I've tried to forget I turned mine in, and been fairly successful. I've also tried not to ask how bad the wait has been recently. It stinks to hear it's more than the 6 months I was hoping for. A friend yesterday told me applications are way up right now....as I figured they would be. Well, let's hope the wait isn't too bad (of course it gives me more time to save for the pistol.)

I'm sorry to say that you're all looking at this the wrong way. The process in Monroe County is painfully long. Everyone seems to start panicing at about the 7 month period on some false hope that the process will actually be completed on the low end of the spectrum ie; 6 months.
I turned in my paperwork in March of '08 and recieved my permit in November of '08. The funny thing is that my wife turned her in her paperwork in July of '08 and got her permit a week before me.

The best thing you can do is assume that the process always takes 18 months.....regardless. This way you'll have a nice suprise in 9-12 months

When you read that Wayne County has been turning them around in 2-6 weeks the Monroe County process is a bit ridiculous.

Mine has been 7 months 2 weeks to the date.

My concern comes from when I turned in the application the pistol permit office recommended that I got re-fingerprinted because the first set the sheriff did a bad job. I went back to the sheriff and they re did the prints and agreed that they were not that good. However when I left they would not give me the prints and they said they would internally mail them to the pistol permit office the next mourning. I went back to the county clerk building and told them. They took my application without having the prints and said that they will put it together when the get the prints. For all I know my application is sitting on a desk waiting for the fingerprints and the fingerprints are sitting on a desk waiting for the completed application

The waiting time doesn't really matter to me, just I am worried that my application is sitting uncompleted

    Sorry havent replied it awhile.

I received my permit on Feburary 2nd 2010. So that was 1 month less than a year wait from the time I started all of this. What a crock.

So I spent a whole lot of time waiting and my interest in obtaining a gun dropped. Many other financial obligations came first so I didnt end up buying a gun until this month. 1 month less than a year from the time I got my permit.

I purchased my gun from an online vendor and I had it shipped to a local dealer. Now Im just waiting to hear from the dealer so I can take the invoice he sends me down to the county courthouse and get the gun put on my permit. Then maybe....2 years from when I started....I will finally own a handgun.

Finally. I can consider myself a handgun owner.

    I picked up a Springfield Armory XD40 4"

Friend of mine owns quite a few Glocks and XD's and let me shoot all of them.

THe XD40 was the one I was most comfortable with and happened to be the most accurate out of the bunch I shot so that is what I got.

Ive heard many good things about the XD series and while many people said my first gun should be a revolver, I disagree.

(Although I think a revolver might be my 2nd handgun)
