Take it from the guy that sees the process and lectures on it all the time.

I wish this were the case in Albany county. The NRA Basic class instructors specifically tell students to put "Hunting, Target Shooting." Once the permit arrives, they recommend filling out the amendment form to remove restrictions. I have an LEO friend that echoes the same sentiment. It's a shame that we have to jump through hoops here, but I suppose it could always be worse.

Each county is different. That's the biggest issue in the state. Also, be careful what you hear from all the people outside the process, rumours and innuendo seem to work more than the truth.

Have the site owners thought of creating a database/topic devoted to the permit process for each county? Maybe list the requirements, costs, experiences of those who have applied, etc, etc? It might be a useful resource and would go a long way towards countering the rumors and innuendo.

It's been tossed around but just hasn't happened yet. I could write up one for Monroe county but would need member input for all other counties.

Anyone who wants to PM me the process for their county feel free and I will make a sticky with the info.

Heck, I can help with Broome easily. I also have the connections in Chenango, Tioga, Oneida, Genesee, Yates, Livingston, Wayne, Ontario, and probably a couple more.

Let's figure out what info we need without getting too crazy and we'll put it together. If I don't know it, I can definitely find out.

I would definatly like to know more about the necessary steps and helpful tips for Oneida county. My wife and I have signed up for the class at our local gun club. One of the guys there was saying to not put personal defense but has been a long time sense he got his permit.

I would only listen to the instructors or those in the permit office. Don't use the heresay or rumours, they'll only get you screwed.

Onondaga will not issue anyone a CC permit, just a restricted one.

No one should everything on the internet as 100% fact without verifying it on their own.

I remember when I was going to apply for my permit, I had no idea if Monroe county even issued unrestricted permits or restricted them all. I was happy to find somewhere (the now history packing.org) that had info listed for different counties from people who had gone through the process willing to share what they wrote for reasons and whether or not their permits came back restricted. It was a good starting point for someone who didn't even know where the pistol office was.

Most of the info is just a summary of the steps and requirements meant to summarize what the county publishes anyway.


Oneida county issues restricted permits to everyone, too. At least everyone I know who's gotten their permit in the past few years. I do know some people that have had the restrictions removed after having their permits for a while and taking additional training. I don't know how common removing them is though.

I could probably get some people to train with you if you got the county's OK.

Oneida county has gone so far as having a rubber stamp that says something like "for hunting, target, hiking and camping only" so they don't even have to write it by hand.

I received an unrestricted license to carry in Chautauqua County today. At the pistol class the instructor told us NOT to check self-defense since they do not issue permits for that here. I checked hunting and target practice and received an unrestricted ccw. It took about 2 months and they do a complete background check. Now I have to buy a gun!

Put "Target shooting, Hunting, Personal Defense" on my application for Monroe County 8yrs ago and never had a problem. Got it in the mail 5 months later...

I did the first part of my pistol course today. The instructors said to list personal defense first on your list of reasons for the permit.

The instructors also have a personal self defense class for woman, my wife wants to learn how to break pelvises and gouge out eyes, I am kind of scared . J/K.
