Default Finally got my permit yesterday

After taking care of everything 1 day back in the middle of February, my permit came in the mail yesterday (Thank god we still have Saturday mail eh? LOL)

SO yea... A few questions here, and the most important one first seeing as how i'm a homeowner in another county now (as of last week):

    1. I'm moving to Wayne county in 8 weeks. --> We bought a house, closing 11/21. What are my options here? The paper I got with my permit says I have to go to notify clerk of change of address, but do I need to re-apply for permit in Wayne Co or can I leave it in MC and just let them know I live elsewhere?

    2. I have shot pistols before, know how to use them, etc, but I still want to take a firearm/pistol specific safety course... Recommendations of one course over another (and any links would be appreciated)

    3. Where to buy? Gun store around here (closest to me is Victor Pro Guns & the places out on 332 & 96 (don't know the name off the top of my head) or perhaps go online and just deal with an FFL?

1- contact Monroe county via phone and see how they want to handle it.. maybe as easy as going to the monroe county clerk and changing your address or may have to go to your new clerks office and do it there.

2- Dave from Rochester Personal Defense offers some great handgun coures for safety and training. I would shoot him a call and feel him out on what you are looking for. Rochester Personal Defense - SafeInRochester.com, Self Defense Classes, Firearms Training in Rochester New York

3- Shop around online for local retailers you can go lay your hands on...Gander Mountain has a great selection of guns at great prices...many with rebates or on sale.
If new to guns I would make safety my primary concern feature in a gun. beretta line has several in the model 92, 96 and PX4 storm.
Do as much research as you can and visit some of the local shooting ranges and ask questions there too.

Here is Monroe County webpage dealing with address change. You also should look at the transfer pistol permit part on same page.County Clerk | Monroe County, NY

Um, honestly I don't remember, i'm guessing back by April? I know it was longer waiting in between phone call and mail than submitting and phone call.

I would use Gander to be able to check out what you're interested in and fondle it, but buy online and have it shipped to a dealer. Gander is way overpriced imho.

/\ agree, plus they try to sell you warranties (at least on used firearms I have seen.) Just make sure you factor in shipping costs and FFL costs and if its still a good amount cheaper then go the online route. If its close in price then it might be worth just buying it from dealer since you will get it quicker.

Check out Beikerch, and American Sportsman in East Rochester, Also Jackson Guns and Ammo in henrietta. Depending on distance you are willing to drive, pro gun in Victor is not bad.

    Congrats Gus.

Jackson's has the best prices locally on pistols and has a pretty darn good selection too. The best thing to do is go some place you can actually get your hands on several different models (large selection). Everyone is different and what may fit one person you might hate.

As for classes, RPD offers basic and Jim from FTWNY offers basic courses as well. Only thing I can say is take a class from someone that actually has class teaching experience. The NRA basic class ends with a live fire session so if you have not made a purchases yet and attend a larger Basic class with a large attendance you might have the chance to check out a few handgun options at that time.

After the basic is stuff is out of the way, then the sky is the limit, beginner to advanced classes are offered by both MDTS and RPD. Can't go wrong with either.

    Congrats, enjoy and be safe!

Sweet - congrats on getting your permit!

As far as Monroe vs. Wayne County, make sure you do your homework and determine which affords you the most benefit. In my case, when I switched my residence from Monroe to Steuben County, there was no question. Steuben, hands down is much more "handgun friendly" and even allow me to have two pickup coupons at a time. I don't know enough about Wayne County to advise you.

Also, access to the county clerk's offices should weigh into your decision. If you stay with MC, do you mind having to go back downtown to do your business, or is the Wayne County office more convenient?

As far as training, let me also highly recommend Dave at RPD!

Relative to where to buy, my advice is to visit the local shops and begin to build relationships with those you are comfortable with. Is your intention is to buy one handgun, or do you see yourself building a collection? While many on here will tell you to shop & fondle local, then buy online, I would coach you to support the local shops. I have, well, more than a few in my collection... ok, quite a few, and have never bought one online.

Get to know Paul at Pro Gun, Clyde at Liberty, Fred at American Sportsman, Kordell at Jackson Guns & Ammo, Jim at Avon Guns, Neil at Beikirks and you will be further ahead. If you want to travel further, come on down here to Steuben County and visit Gary at Schulteiss's, Gary at Louie's or Brian at Bullseye. In fact, tell them all that Terry sent you! My concern has always been, if you don't support these small shops, eventually we'll lose them. Building relationships with them and supporting them will yield you benefits down the road. To me, price is important, but service and support are more critical.

Your other option is to buy used in a private ftf transaction, once you've made up your mind on what you want.

As far as Gander Mountain, good deals can be had on their used guns and sometimes their sale prices on new are hard to beat. Just don't expect a lot of expertise from the other side of the counter.

    Good luck and happy shopping!

I know wanye county has some funky rules, I think Ddan went from wayne to monroe so he might be able to offer some advice or information about both.

Here's another vote for Rochester Personal Defense. The Defensive Pistol Skills 101 will go a LONG way towards helping with the basics and safe handling. Prior to that, you might want to consider an NRA Basic Pistol course. Just make sure you find a "real" one and not one that issues a certificate after listening to two hours of BS.

You can also consider taking the course together with K.

Gus as I said on Facebook, I'm putting together an NRA Basic Pistol class for Erica and some other friends. I'll see ya this week though for sure.
