Default Wal-Mart Ask For Pistol Permit To Buy Pistol Ammo

I just came from my local Wal-Mart in Newburgh and picked up a box of Federal .38 special. They wanted to see my pistol permit before selling it to me. She said that is their frule ofr any pistol ammo. Stupid if you ask me since there are rifles chambered in pistol calibers as we all know.

Funny thing is I went to the Wal-Mart in Monroe/Harriman and picked up a box of 9mm and they didnt ask me anything. Prices were decent on the ammo also.

My opinion of this is that I wish all places asked for permits more often. i know we all have rights to do this and to do that, and you can even find a million videos on youtube of some fellow walking down the street with his gun hanging out and his camera rolling just to see what response it will generate. 90% of my closest friends are police officers with wives and kids at home...and if asking someone why they have a gun is beyond reason then I am a loss for words. if it is a small thing to do in order to make sure these same people that protect us daily feel safe themselves while on the job I am all for it and have no problem with any of the questions they may have. Same with selling the ammo... Many of us have family at home and I want people to ask questions just for the slight chnace they may stop some other nut job with a grudge to show. just my own very humble opinion

This is a Walmart rule, I have been asked at the Monroe/Harriman however they know me now so the last couple of times they have not bothered.

Yeah, it's been that way for quite a while I think. Do any of the Walmarts in Orange County (or nearby) actually carry firearms anymore?

The computer tells them to ask for a permit when the UPC is scanned

They did at the New Hartford, Oneida County, Walmart when i purchased 9mm. the second time they did it, i asked "what if this was for a rifle? You don't need a permit for that....."
    they had no answer.
The first time i was asked, the CSM was a B*TCH like you can't imageine. I wrote Walmart a letter online, never heard from them.

I've also been subject to this permit check at wally world. However, i'm fairly certain that 99% of the people that work at the walmart I go to don't even know what a pistol permit is. Next time I think I am going to show them my fishing license, and I'm sure they will look at with their mouth open and glazed over eyes as usual and say, uhhh ok thank you.

Some ammo makes the computer prompt them to ask you if it's for a pistol. Some ammo makes the computer prompt them to ask for a permit. I used to buy .40 and they would ask. I would say it's for a rifle. The same store would ask to see my permit if I bought 9mm. I tried saying it was for a rifle (I do own a 9mm carbine) and they said I need a permit to buy it.

I bought a box of .22 ammo at the Wal-Mart in Cicero last week. The cashier asked if it was for a handgun. It did seem like he was just doing what the computer prompted him to do.

Yep definitely a Walmart rule. No biggie, i've got my permit on me even if I'm not carrying.

I bought some ammo at Dick's the other day. Didn't even bat an eye before handing it to me. Walked up to the register to pay for it and my other purchases and again nothing. The only question I got at all was from the cashier who asked if i was sure this was the right ammo as I could not return it if it was wrong or I didn't want it (I appreciate that question).

There are well-documented historical reasons for why it is unlawful in the US for a LEO to ask for "papers" without reasonable suspicion of a crime. Every single enumerated right in out Bill of Rights was placed there by people who had seen what happens when those restrictions are not placed on the government. I'd love to discuss this topic with you but think it would be more appropriate in another thread. Suffice it to say: I highly recommend you really consider why you have certain rights before you throw them away.

    Concerning the OP:
Used to have to do this at Gander Mountain in Johnson City as well, but a couple of months ago they moved the ammo out from behind the counter and only ask for birthdate now. Last time they asked I told him 01/01/01 and ended up having to go to another register because it didn't understand the concept of 1901, hah.

I have been asked at Dick's for my permit. I asked the guy what if I had a carbine that shot .40? He said no problem, we would still sell it to me. His explanation was "legit gun owners love talking about their guns"

I was actually surprised that they didn't ask me. I just assume everyone's going to ask - one of the reasons why I have my permit on me regardless of whether or not I'm carrying (the other reason is that I don't have to have to worry about where it is if i am carrying).

I don't mind being asked by the walmart associate for my pistol liscense and when buying ammo, what I do mind is the meth addicted looking cashier studying my permit for a few minutes and then saying wow you have a bunch of guns huh?...Maybe I seem paranoid but it looked like he was reading my address.

Side note, what also bothers me a lot about walmart (middletown store) is the ammo in the locked case is always completly mis priced, if priced at all. I had a talk with the manager a few days ago about why it is less than acceptable, my reasoning is I don't mind that it is locked and an associate needs to open and get the ammo for the customer. However they need to have an associate with a key avaliable with out making me wait 15 minutes, and if customers cant access the ammo, it is employees putting merchandise in wrong places (either stocking or if someone doesn't want a box the employee just puts the box where they feel is a good place).

Most of the time the associate in the gun department doesnt know his elbow from his *******. I had somewhat of a hastle trying to by shotgun slugs and .22 hollowpoints. No worries on the shotgun, but I was asked if the .22 cal is for a pistol. I said no. He said can I see your permit. I said I dont have one, its for a long gun. He says are you sure. I say YES. he says ok and checks me out. I guess im buying ammo from Buffalo Gun Center from now on.

Sometimes they ask, sometimes they don't . . . but if you want to get technical, they are supposed to ask.

NY Penal s. 270.00(5): "Notwithstanding the provisions of subdivision four of this section, it shall be unlawful for any dealer in firearms to sell any ammunition designed exclusively for use in a pistol or revolver to any person, not authorized to possess a pistol or revolver. The violation of this section shall constitute a class B misdemeanor."

No doubt! Not to mention, depending on where you receive your permit, it can be one of the most unsecured government-issued documents there is. Mine (from Broome County) is a piece of paper with a picture I provided taped to it. Wouldn't be particularly difficult for a BG to make a fake one or swap out the pic from a stolen permit. And, of course, a Wal-Mart employee isn't going to be able to tell a real permit from a fake one - as several here have mentioned, they have shown their hunting license in the past.

Too bad they get pissy when you try to get some of those calibers for carbines

There is more to it than that. Mine has the embossed Broome County seal on it (arranged so it embosses part of the picture as well), Judge Cawley's signature and my thumb print on the back. I'll concede the point that no Wally-World cashier is likely to look for those things but they are there.
