    Default New Permits for NY

I live in Monroe County and went into the clerks office a few days ago to add a new handgun to my permit as well as to update my new address. My paper permit is showing some good wear and tear on it and I asked if I could also request a new one to replace the worn out one...the clerk told me yes but that i should simply wait because they are getting ready to update the permits to a plastic style drivers license type permit shortly and that I would be better off getting that when they do switch over... just an FYI

It's not all of New York. It's happening on a county by county basis. Ontario County switched earlier this year. Some counties may never switch, as the cost to implement the system is huge.

I asked the clerk at out sheriff's office and she said not anytime soon so we are sticking to paper for now.

They've been issuing the new plastic-style permits in Niagara for a few months now, got one when my permit was approved awhile back. They're convenient and fit right behind my license in my wallet. Whenever you head to the permit office to register a new pistol, they take the card and print the make/model/sn right on the back.

Fulton started about 3 years ago. I would get the new one but its about double the amount to replace the permit or make an amendment. I will keep my paper one until they make me get the new style.

I've had a plastic card from Rockland for 8 years. I have an impressive pile of useless cards.

As far as I know, Montgomery county still issues Paper. That is not good for when I get mine. I sweat like a pig in a sauna on hot days and paper stuff in my wallet (see coupons, money) just turns to crap.

Good to hear that perhaps MC will be going plastic. Maybe it'll help keep me from wearing out my paper one

Thats the boat I am in...mine is so bad that the fold in the middle sounds like a rust hinge when I unfold it. Years ago while riding along with a Greece Police officer friend of mine we stopped down at prct one and I used a laminator that seals the card in yet does not stick to it ( kinda like a pocket) this was the best thing I have done as I forget my wallet is in my pants all the time and the wife washes it constantly.

In Erie they have plastic cards, the clerks at the permit office said that if they had not got the funding for it a couple of years back that they would never have gone to them now because they do not have the money anymore.

They said that they got lucky and that counties that do not have the system as of yet may have a hard time getting the funding to go to this in the future.

Orleans County has been using plastic cards for at least as long as I've had my permit. Updates are easy, and $5 per permit gets you a new card printed with your pistols on the back.
ChrisWNY is right...fits neatly behind my license so I can have both out immediately to hand to an officer if necessary.

I have plastic in erie and appreciate it actually. Yes, it takes more space, but when you tend to wash your wallet once a year or so - it's better than paper.

Delaware has plastic permits also. Down side is now they charge $3 to remove a pistol, due to the reprinting of the card.
Now if you add one at the same time as remove one,it's only $3.
